Hello Jim...If the seat controllers for the S40 are like the C70 you can try this...There is a micro switch on the hinge part of the seat
where the seat back and bottom meet. Just inside the hinge point. There is a spring attached to a metal plate.The spring comes off because one of the tabs holding it breaks. A lot of times you can reach under there and roll the metal plate and get the seat to move back.

Electric or manual??? If electric one of the motors has gone out. If the kids were playing with it they may have held the button down causing the motor to spin while the seat was all the way foward and it will just burn the motor up after so long. Also the switch could be bad. Unfortunatley being that its power there is no way to manually move the seat back without the motor turning or removing the seat and spinning the motor sprocket by hand...

Pry off plastic tabs covering ends of rails. Remove (14mm) bolts at end of rails going to car floor. Seat is now free. Turn seat on side. Pry black wire housing off its holder. Wiggle seat side of release wire so that it comes out the slot of the housing. Lift the seat out of the car. The wire is the remote release from the trunk area.

The first thing that I would recommend is to check the fuse box. Always start with the simplest thing first. If that isn't the issue, the next step would be to check under the seat and ensure that the wiring harness that powers the motor for the seat is connected. If for some reason that is not the issue, you need to check the connection to the power seat adjustment switch. If both of those are connected, you will then want to ensure that power is getting to both the switch and the motor. If you are getting power to the seat adjustment control and the motor the you may be looking at a faulty seat control switch, or a seat motor. Before you replace the motor you need to know that motors will "stick" and by gently tapping on the motor with a rubber mallet while activating the seat control will usually free the motor. If that doesn't work then you may need a new seat motor. I hope that you have found this information useful, thanks for using fixya!
