There is a hatch over the Fuel Tank under the carpet. Pull the hatch off, disconnect the wires and hoses and unscrew the locking ring. pull the fuel pump and sending unit out as one piece. Replace the Fuel Pump and replace in reverse order.
check the transmition fluid level, ( do this with the engine running & the selector in P) if low top up & see if fault cured
also check fluid is no dis-coloured or smells burnt, if so you may have to drain the transmition & change the filter & fluid, a transmition flush would be a good idea.
if the problem remains it is most likely the seals/clutches in the transmition are worn
It may well be a camshaft sensor at fault. The camshaft sensor is part of the 'ignition timing' system and works in conjunction with the ignition packs (or coil). The camshaft sensor is a common item to fail.
However, before you rush off and buy a new one, be aware that there are other sensors on the Volvo. And Volvo parts aren't cheap. There's a crankshaft sensor and cold start sensor too ...
Best bet is to get a mobile mechanic who has the necessary electronic equipment to connect to the car's ecu (computer). This will usually give an error code which indicates what unit is faulty. You can always change the parts yourself.

It sounds like your fuel pump is having a problem with getting the last of the fuel from your tank. The pump also has a strainer on it. The unfortunate reality with the 1993 Volvo 850 is that the pump and strainer are located inside of your gas tank. You can look for kinks or pinched areas in the line but from your description it sounds like the pump is going. It has to work much harder when the fuel is low in the tank.

These models had problems with the blower motor power stage, which is what controls the fan speed, and the blower motors wear out. There a good chance it needs both!
