Try simple fix 1st. Remove gas cap and clean it and gas orifice, then reinstall. Then go to auto parts store, borrow meter(free) and read codes.
What you describe is often due to a defective DIM or also known as a instrument cluster.
The problem could also be a defective Central Electrical Moulde. It is hard to tell without reading the codes.
Either take the car to mechanic or get a good Volvo scanner and read the fault codes yourself.

IT IS POSSIBLE THERE IS A BUG IN THE SOFTWARE OF THE DASH WHICH HAS CAUSED IT TO FREEZE. AS WITH ANY COMPUTER A SIMPLE POWER DOWN AND REBOOT COULD SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. IGNITION ON DISCONNECT THE BATTERY LEAVE FOR SVERAL MINS THEN MAKE SURE IGNITION IS SWITCHED OFF THEN RECONNECT AND CHECK OPPERATION.
Poss coolant temp sensor or temp sender. PS, are u sure that switch is wired properly may also be a bad switch.
