Can you tell me how i change my supertintine belt on my gmc envoy and do i need a special tool?

The pulley has a bearing in it that needs to be replaced. Special tools are needed to take the clutch plate off to release the snap ring holding the pulley on the compressor.

AC service should only be done by a qualified HVAC technician, there are specialized tools and equipment required to diagnose and repair these systems.

Should be a square 3/8" hole in the tensioner. There you can insert a 3/8" extention, and connect a breaker bar. Turn it to take the pressure off the belt and remove.

The manual states that you need to use a special spring compressor (J45400) to compress the spring to remove the strut. I have never done the job on the Envoy so I can't say for sure, but sometimes the manuals state that you need to use a special spring compressor and you are able to use any spring compressor. I would suggest taking a closer look at the strut assembly now as it is on the car and you can usually tell if you need a special compressor. My guess is that you don't, but I may be incorrect. There is usally and idler wheel that the fan belt goes around that you have to push away from the belt with a socket wrench or a special tool you can buy at most auto stores (a long bar with the proper drive on the end of it) it inserts usaully dead center of the idler. Sometimes I just use a crow bar pressing againt the idler pulley if there is something safe to press agaist. Sometime you have to losen the alternator bolts and tip the alternator away from the belt if it runs of the same belt as the fan.

1. Remove the fuel pump relay from the junction box
2. Crank the engine.
3. Allow the engine to start and stall.
4. Crank the engine for an additional 3 seconds to ensure the relief of any remaining fuel pressure.
5. Disconnect the negative battery cable in order to avoid re-pressurizing the fuel system.
6. Install the fuel pump relay to the junction box .
7. Tighten the fuel filler cap.

I just replaced the water pump on my 2003 Envoy XL with the 5.3L V8. Spent ALL day doing it! Would have been MUCH easier if I had the special tool that holds the water pump pulley still while you turn the nut for the fan clutch. There are 4 holes in the pulley that have to be pinned (at least 2) with a special wrench. I managed to make something myself using a piece of scrap metal and a couple of 5/16" bolts, but it was a royal pain. Tried three different auto parts stores for tool rental, but they only had tools for pulleys with bolt heads sticking out, not holes in the pulley. Autozone.com has online repair information that was VERY helpful. I didn't have to buy the manual because they had all the info on their site. I also used the trailvoy.com forum to get some tips from others that had done it.
