Sounds like both outer CV joints are worn i would replace them, greasing them won't fix your problem.

Thank you sooo much for the quick response, do you think it will be a costly exercise to carry out?

Unfortunately yes they are expensive to replace or rebuild and will need to be repaired by a specialist as you will need specialised tools to take apart

SOURCE: clunking in front end when turning

Likely your CV joint - this happened on my car on both sides. Sounds like crunching? Best to get it looked at before it explodes when turning like mine did!

How to fit front wheel bearings Which brand to use for quality

If the car is front wheel drive a puller is required to dismantle the hub a rather involved job better left to a mechanic .If rear wheel drive do the following. ( Applies to front wheel drive also.) Chock rear wheels, loosen front wheel nuts, jack up car, fit safety stands, remove wheel , remove grease cap from axle. remove split pin or locking nut on axle ,Remove hub, with a punch drive out the grease seal ,the tapered cone bearings can now be removed, the 2 bearing cups still in the housing will have to be pressed out ,all old grease has to be cleaned out. the new cones must be repacked with high temp bearing grease . tap in the seal with the lip facing inwards , slide on the hub fit the outer cone to the axle , the spacer and nut goes on next, tighten the nut to seat the bearings , spin the hub make sure its free to spin, back off the nut one eighth of a turn fit a new split pin or lock tab. fit grease cap and road wheel.

Free wheel hub LHS not locking

Thegrease inside the hub may have gone hard. So you might need to pull it off, open it up and give it a good clean in kero, and finsihing off with degreaser. Wash out degreaser with warm detergent water. Reassemble and apply some new grease for lubrication. Not too much that it leaks out too easily. Also make sure your clean out any dust in the narrow gaps between the out rotating parts. This dust and grime just makes it hard to lock and un-lock the hubs. After cleaning ut the dust using WD40 or simillar, and constant working back and orwad in a container of kero, re-lubricate with WD40. Should last a few years before it needs to be done again.

I have a 1988 toyota 4runner 4wd (not sr5 or trd) with manual locking hubs. when in 2H it runs great but in 2H with the hubs locked i get loud clunking sounds while driveing straight and while turning. it...

Sounds like a cv joint that is lacking grease. Try poking a small hole in the boot and using a grease gun to fill boot with grease. To seal hole a small dab of automotive silicone over hole. If still clunking possibly still could have a bad axle.

The anti-lock brake light keeps coming on. After the first time and 3 mechanics later it was determined that the hubs on the front right and left had to be replaced, which I did. It was fine for awhile...

there may be a loose connection at the front hubs, or damged CV boots allowing grease to accumilate on the sensors, bring it back to the mechanic as they didnt properly fix it!!

Clunk under auto center front when turning left or right

have your CV joints checked. If the CV joint boots crack, the joint will lose all the grease and accumilate dirt. This will cause a metal grind/ping when making turns. If ignored, it may cause the joint to break causing the vehicle to be stationary and unable to move. Hopefully this help!!

Grinding noise changes with speed stops when turned right. replaced left front wheel bearing. noise is still there. whats wrong ?

Does sound stop when you turn LEFT?

Turning RIGHT puts the heavy load on the LEFT front wheel.
That initially STOPPED the noise, correct? So why did you change L?

Turning LEFT puts the load on the RIGHT. Did you change the RIGHT?

Let's say this:
If turning RIGHT stops the noise, it's the RIGHT one that's likely bad.
If turning LEFT stops the noise, it's the LEFT one that's more likely bad.

Make sense? Turning RIGHT loads the LEFT wheel; and vice-versa as the WEIGHT SHIFTS AWAY FROM THE TURN.

More than likely it is what some folks call a CV joint problem, not wheel bearings. Try backing up and then going forward to see if "clunking sound" or a sharp "bang" is heard. Wheel bearings and CV joints only work if smooth. Sometimes a BEARING RACE is bad. Also, a bad spindle / part of the CV joint / transaxle assembly worn or badly machined. If in a WET ENVIRONMENT especially, u may want to try marine grade grease or teflon-added grease.

Ford F150 lost 4 wheel drive 2003 FX4

Take the hubs apart, inspect them, and clean them, especially the one that you heard a clunk, something might have broke in the automatic hub lock. Make sure everthing gets put back exactly the same, or you'll have more problems. If that doesn't work, then there is something wrong somewhere in the transfer case.
