Speculation without further details but 3 usual causes:
1. Clock spring in steering wheel for airbag open circuit.
To Test - disconnect battery-disconnect airbag ribbon from steering wheel -insert 3 -8ohm resistance bypass in airbag plug below steering column feeding clockspring. reconnect battery and see if light goes out after 5 seconds
2. Check passenger seat sensor operational.
To test - with ignition off - disconnect plug under passenger seat for sensor pad and insert test ohm resistance in feed plug. switch ignition on as test 1.
3. Check steering wheel button operation. if any radio actions do not work problem may be infrared link between steering wheel and radio (especially aftermarket modules)

the key's are special order and they are fairly expensive. Test the voltage in your remote batteries. They should be 3 volts. These systems are very voltage senstive and require a good battery to operate properly. I'm assuming you have the original batteries in the remote now and it is 6 plus years old. These batteries generally last 3 years so it is definatly time if you have not replaced them yet!

You can not reset the SRS system without speciallist equipment.
The light on means there is a fault or something has been disconnected.

SOURCE: Mercedes c200 kompressor 2003, engine
Mine an E200 Kompressor had the engine light on and the vehicle could spew gearbox oil from the cap in the engine. We found out that the cause is normally a blocked exhaust i the two front silencers. The trick is simply to open up the silencers and remove the filters from them. Note that after a time the smoke blocks the holes and the vehicle can not "breath" normally
