The ball joints on both 2wd and 4wd upper are pressed in you need to remove snap ring and using a hammer pop out the old one out this is after you seperate the upper arm from the spindle. To install the new ball joint you should use a ball joint press that you can rent at most autoparts shops

U have to replace the whole unit
--put a jack stand under the lower control arm
close to the lower ball joint
--The unit will be held in with either rivets or bolts--If rivets u will have to chisel the heads off
--loosen the nut on the stud, leave on 3o4 threads
--with a ball joint fork separate the stud from the spindle
--remove the nut carefully
--the spindle should fall away, tie it up so the brake lines don't stretch
--u may need to knock rivets out of the holes with a drift
--instal the new unit with the bolts usually supplied
--assemble in reverse
--get a wheel alignment

Lower ball joint wear spec 2005 Silverado 2wd

There are several different wear specs regarding lower ball joints. The official manufacturer torque spec. for lower ball joint wear (For your truck) is 5 in lbs. The official wear spec. to pass the Federal State inspection is less than 1/16" of play at the ball joint (up and down and side to side). The official wear spec. for a front end alignment is zero play.

How do I replace a rear upper control arm ball joint on a 1998 Lexus gs400

You probably should replace the whole upper control arm. I don't believe that you can separate the ball joint from the control arm without damaging it and the ball joints are not listed separately for sale. [If the ball joint is bad, the bushings can't be in very good shape, either.]

To replace the upper control arm, you need to take the weight off the spring and pop the ball joint out of the spindle with a special tool
OTC 6297 Ball Joint Separator
Then it is bolted in by the 2 pivot bolts [#3 in the diagram].

Lower ball joint broke and i need to replace it. How do i take it off and put a new one in.(do i need a ball joint press) 98 Chevy Silverado 1500

jack up the the side with the broken ball joint under the control arm.
Remove the axle nut (4x4)
remove the caliper and the rotor.
remove the outer tie rod from the knuckle.
Remove the upper and lower control arm nuts and remove knuckle from vehicle.

Using a ball joint press remove and install the ball joint.

tighten axle nut (4x4 only) to 133 lb-ft after everything is assembled.

Do I replace the whole upper control arm or press new ball joint, also do I index the arm before removeall or can I just replace the arm.

Although you never said what model, 2 or 4 wheel drive and the engine size, I looked around and found this.
Both 2 & 4 wheel drive take the same ball joint &/or upper control arm. You can opt to do what ever is money wise or easier for you. Auto-zone carries both. You can press a new one in for about 30 bucks or replace the arm with the ball joint for 104. Auto-zone will lend you the press for no charge if you buy the part there. And as far as indexing, yes always. Although anytime front end components are changed a front wheel alignment should be done. The bushing bolts are your Camber adjustments.

I Need new lower control arm ball joint repair. Some say replace the whole arm assembly, and some say just the ball joint itself.Which is right??Also should the upper be replaced as well while were at it?

There is really no need to replace the whole arm assembly unless it's damaged. On the other hand it is a good idea to replace the control arm bushings, and in my opinion yes do the upper also.

You should be able to just replace the ball joints, should not need to replace the comntrol arms. Hope this helps

I need to replace the upper ball joints

Remove the upper control arms and, using a suitable press, press out the old ball joints, press in the new ones. While you are there, consider replacing in inner bushings.
Re-assemble, lubricate and align.

Upper ball joints/ '89 silverado 1500 4x4

I think the lower ball joints when removing will give you easier access to the top. I would suggest going to the local parts store for a print out of the procedure to be on the safe side.
