I've had this problem on one of my rovers (97) It was the switch in the brake pedal. The switch is two stage one for the lights and one stage for shift lock. Replace it and your good to go

Hi centa, sounds to me like the brake release on the gear selector, when you put your foot on the brake it releases the gear selector peg so you move the gear selector, if you can remove the top cover have a look down and see if you can see the lock peg moving, if it is, it sounds to be more like an internal problem. hope it is something simple.

On my 97 Land Rover Disco 1 my left front wheel feels like it's starting to seize up. When I jacked the left wheel up it wouldn't spin freely?

You need to remove the wheel and make sure that the brake pads are not seized and that the caliper is able to operate first by forcing the pads back against the piston to check that the piston retracts. This will rule out a problem with the brakes. If the problem still persists when the brakes are proved to be ok then the next place to look is the wheel bearings. I hope this helps, all the best.

Common problems with disco 2 year 2000. thanks v8

Hi welcome main problems are the abs valves causing the 3 dash lights (search 3 amigos online) a really badly sited compressor can cause air suspension models to fail giving the bags a slow leak the V8 is a solid engine but can have radiator expansion tank and cap failures
the other issue is electrics windows and door looms are problematic

My land rover disco '97 has a smell when driving uphill. smells like burning. never does it any other time?

Hi
It's an odd fault so I will try my best to think of things you should be looking at, but Im not 100% on this one.

Check around the exhaust manifold and down pipe somthing may be touching it when the car go's up hill. check the lambda sensor wire, and engine loom & wires around this area.

as its a 4x4 I would check the prop shaft is not contacting anything also.

Not much moves back when the car does so it's a tricky fault.

Hope this helps
Regards
Dan

98 disco 300tdi with rear wheel bearing problems

I would just replace the bearings, They're not that expensive and they're quite easy to replace. After replacement, if it happens again on the same wheel, you probably have a bent semi-axel. I had this exact problem on a '93 200tdi disco.

Key will not come out of ignition in 97 disco

I had this exact problem. The reason was the little push button on the automatic shifter that you press when you want to move it from Park - sometimes when you place it back to Park, it does not go out all the way - this prevents the key lock from releasing the key. Try to pull that button out all the way and it will release it. Cleaning around the button also helps.

97 ranger rover 4.6

Check the battery voltage. At rest it should be 12 to 13 volts.
Cranking should not drop below 10 to 10.5 volts.
