I have an '88 Saab 900s and while driving down the road it sputters then dies. I wait about 30mins. and it will start again drive for a little ways then die again. It smells hot but it's not boiling and the fan doesn't turn on. The fuses are all fine and the fuel pump kicks on. It feels like the car is losing power before it dies, it slows down and when I push the gas it sputters and eventually dies. What would cause this?
Fuel filters act like this as they clog, they allow a low flow of gas to the motor which allows it to run however as you press the gas and the rpms go up it requires higher flow- as a result the motor chokes itself out by not receiving enough fuel to operate. Another option is that the spark plugs are fouling, or the fuel relay

When was the last time that the carburetor was stripped and cleaned? Also have you checked the fuel filter? Finally, the problem seems to come and go as the engine is run (and it gets hot) check that the fuel line and any electrical cables are well away from the hot engine as far as is possible.
change your fuel filter and check the fuel pressure on the fuel pump you may have gotten some bad fuel try some STP gas treatment make sure you have a half tank of gas and add a little more go somewhere you can drive 55MPH give these websites a try www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.
