Brake lights on 2000 Civic EX w/ cruise control do not work when brake pedal is pressed. I had the same problem 2 years ago and the brake light switch was replaced. Where do I locate the brake light switch? Is it easy to replace if I do it myself?
I checked under the brake pedal and it is not stuck. I observed that when I turn on the key and press on the brake pedal, I hear a clicking noise within the gear shifter.I checked under the brake pedal and it is not stuck. first check to see if brake lights work, because brake light switch will deactivate cruis control when you press brake pedal to slow down stop.if brake light switch okay, dealership has to check out cruise control since pcm and vechicle speed sensor control the cruise control also.
But, there are usually 2 brake switches in the Cruise circuit.
The Brake Pedal switch - is mounted on the pedal and de-activates the Cruise function (as well as operates the brake lights). The Brake Pressure switch - is mounted to the brake servo/cylinder in the engine bay and acts as a secondary switch to de-activate the cruise function.
Have an assistant check the operation of your brake lights, while you depress the brake pedal. If brake lights do not work, then the Brake Pedal Switch will either need adjusting or the connector to the switch is loose. If all brake lights are functioning, then arrange for someone to check that the brake pedal switch is connecting to the Cruise circuit.
The Brake Pressure Switch in the engine bay - check the connector is pressed in and secure. You should also have the pressure switch resistance checked to ensure it is within factory spec. If not, then replace the brake pressure switch.
I have the same problem on my 1998 Grand Caravan. Cruise control light comes on but it will not set. Have had the clock spring replaced (2 years ago) and BCM (6 months ago). Could be brake light switch on the brake pedal. Haven't been able to check it yet because of weather. Sounds easy to change and costs about $16.00. Will try to post if I get a new switch and it works.
Check to see if your brake lights are staying on.
I thought my cruise control stopped working too, but realized that it would not work because the brake light control on the brake pedal was stuck.
I changed the $40 control and the cruise control works.
Most cruise controls are designed to disengage when you press the brake pedal. I always mention this first because people tend to try to press the clutch pedal while the cruise control is engaged and this startles them when the engine revs up all the way...
Anyway, to use your cruise control:
1) Press the Cruise control button to on.
2) Drive up to the speed you need to go.
3) Press the "Set/Coast" button.
4) let go of the accelerator pedal
If the cruise control system is operating correctly, your vehicle will continue to travel at the same speed until you either press the brake pedal or you cancel the cruise setting with the cancel button of the cruise control.
Remember: Your civic is not equiped with a radar system for your cruise control, so if you are aproaching an intersection or traffic in front of you, do not expect the car to know it needs to stop. Also, cruise control only operates the accelerator pedal i your car, it is not autopilot, so it will not steer your car for you.
(you think it sounds silly that I am writing this? You should see my friend's car... He thought Cruise control was like autopilot, so he smashed his brand new civic into a tree...)
make sure brake lights are working,if working brakepedal switch fine.it is most likley the cruise control cut out switch.blue and white switch on brake pedal.
Pull up on the brake pedal. If that does not work check your brake light bulbs (LED brake lights will also keep your cruise control form working). Finally check all of the fuses. This system needs at least 3 different fuses to work properly.
