How do i remove the fan and pulley on a 1987 ford ranger 2.9 v-6?

The question is: How remove clutch in order to remove fan mounted on its engine-side face.
  • Generally, the clutch drive half shaft must be uncoupled from coolant pump (impeller drive) half shaft using special wrench kit available as loaner from AutoZone (free with $79 approx deposit).
  • Best done after shroud & radiator remove after coolant drained.
  1. Uncouple coolant pump and fan clutch drive shaft(s) as follows:
    1. span across combo-pulley-sheaves-unit mounting bolt heads with large tool kit wrench, and
    2. span inline clutch coupling nut with small tool kit wrench. Then,
    3. turn small wrench (and coupling nut) CW while resisting with large wrench (CCW) to turn coupling nut until disengaged from coolant pump drive shaft.
  2. Remove fan/clutch assembly.
  3. Note direction of mounted fan hub and fan blades orientation to ensure proper re-assembly.
  4. On rear of clutch assy, remove 4 bolts to disengage and remove fan.
  5. Assemble new fan to clutch (or, preferably, new clutch and new fan) using new bolts and washers provided with fan.
  6. Couple fan-clutch assy to coolant pump drive shaft as per opposite of uncoupling step 1, above. (Turn inline nut CCW to tighten...30 ft-lb.
  7. Check that fan can be hand turned...CW.)
  8. Rest shroud over and onto fan.
  9. Replace radiator; remount shroud; reclamp hoses, and refill and air purge cooling system.

Water pump

you must remove fan shroud. theres a tool for the clutch fan but you can use a impact hammer and a 12" bit (left hand thread) loosen pully bolts before removing belt (belt will hold pully from turning) then remove 4 or 6 bolts holding pump on (look at new pump for bolt amounts not sure) clean serfices and install)

How do i remove the fan clutch on my 1995 BMW 325i

You have to purchase or make a tool to hold the pully stationary as you unscrew the fan from the water pump shaft. I bought a strap of steel 1/8" thick and 1 1/2" wide and 24" long at the hardware store. I then drilled two holes in it close to one end, and close to one side of the strap. The hole diameter is just big enough to fit over the heads of the 10 mm bolts that hold the pulley in place. Note that the bolts are in a rectangular pattern. It is best to space your holes to fit two bolts that are the long side of the rectangle. Then I had to grind a half-moon shape into the side of the strap between the holes to allow for the shaft so the tool would get close enough for my little holes to fit over the bolt heads. If this is unclear, you should be able fine a picture of the tool on an automotive tool website.
Then I use a crescent wrench with extra narrow jaws to turn the nut on the fan clutch that screws onto the water pump shaft. This is a lot easier if you remove the air filter box so you can get to that nut easily.
Most important - that nut that holds the fan clutch on the water pump shaft is LEFT HANDED THREAD. Turn it clockwise to unscrew it.

Replacing water pump, how doers the fan come off the pump shaft. It looks like it's screwed on with a large hex nut but how can I loosen it without the shaft turning. Frustrated

The fan clutch is threaded onto the water pump. They make a tool to hold the pulley from turning so you can turn the large hex part of the clutch. You can probably rent one for free from a parts store like autozone or the like. Keep in mind some clutches are left hand threads also keeping the belt on the pulley also helps the pulley from spinning also.

Very tricky there what your asking you need to remove alot of parts to get it done but its possible.
You must remove the radiator than the engine plastic cover than remove all the belts and everything in the way. Along with being able to remove the reverse threaded fan clutch which you need a special tool to hold it while you undue the 22mm or 32mm bolt from the fan clutch bolt than you remove all the water pump bolts good luck

Water Pump Leaking

the hardest part of this job is removing your fan clutch. you removed your top fan shroud, then your fan clutch, its reverse thread. take off your belt, upper radiator hose and 6 10mm bolts hold it in. clean water pump housing and put all back together. aftermarket water pumps do not come with theermostat, dealer pumps do. remove your belt tensioner from old water pump 3- 15mm bolt, two different sizes and install on your new pump. you need, 10mm socket, 15mm socket, flat head screw driver, pliers to removed hose, fan clutch tool(rent at autoparts store)
