If your shift lever selector is loose most likely the shifter tube is cracked and the tab that presses in the shift interlock is not being depressed because the tube is separated or the bushings that hold it in place on the steering column are severely worn or the brackets are broke this happens from trying to get the vehicle out of park without stepping on the brake and forcing the shifter also check your brake lights for functionality if the fuse or bulbs are out you won't be able to get it out of park also the brake light switch at the peddle this what I think your problem is one of these issues and I hope this helps you go to ford parts .comte look up your part if the shifter is wiggling around so you can see it in a picture otherwise advance ,autozone etc.will be cheaper good luck stephen

SOURCE: where is the shift lock overide reease button on

should be able to shift when u press brake pedal, if not press pedal and see if brake lights work if brake light switch is bad this can effect the shift control. if this is not issue then the shifter is jamming and the stifting linkage is most likely worn or out of alignment and should be repaired

How to get transmission out of park with out ignition key

no car stated

no year.

no model.

on cars before 2010 there is a bypass lever hidden on the shifter console.FMVSS 114 (DOT laws)

after 2010 this feature is now illegal in usa, are you in USA?

cant guess any of that.

this is under roll away protection laws. (tricky by year)

you can disconnect the trans linkage under car and shift to neutral.

with due care.....(chock wheels front and back)

on many cars the shifter lever does the locking, so, disconnect it.

Shifter interlock

what car, you never said? NOR YEAR?
park lock out feature;. its broken , they do that. (BTSI system)
got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

no car/year, you get the generic answer.
there is a park lockout DEFEATER on most cars, (never on new cars, due to federal bs)

on the shift console, see the defeat device.
the operators guide covers this. its for EMERGENCIES.
pick one.
http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/jeep/

the A/T box,
Brakes + handle button press, unlocks BTSI

on 2005 and up , no bypass
if the key gets locked too, that tells you what is bad , on newer jeeps
on newer jeeps read this
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=366251

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.
Folks in Sanfranciso, just roll eyes at you, new in town>?

now the grand cherroke,, why not post car model, and year, dang.

quote 2010 oper guide, get one.
Brake/Transmission Interlock Manual Override Your vehicle may be equipped with a shift lock manual override. The manual override may be used in the event that the shift lever should fail to move from PARK with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal pressed. To operate the shift lock manual override, perform the following steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. 2. Firmly set the parking brake. 3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully remove the shift lock manual override cover, which is located on the PRNDL bezel. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. Using the screwdriver, reach into the manual override opening. Press and hold the shift lock lever down. Interlock Manual Override end quote.
no all jeeps have this,

Can not move the gear selecter the button will not go all the way in and the rear brake lights do not come as well

Hi Jeff,
This is an old warning issue or procedure, I had the same problem a few years ago with my Ford Taurus 1995, if rear stop lights not work, you wont be able to moved the shift out of Parking (P); this is to avoid driving without rear stop lights. If no lights, normally a fuse is blow out or all bulb lights are gone, please check.
There is an alternate procedure to be able to drive your car, but, avoid driving without Stop lights. Turn the ignition key to the point before starting the engine, this release the lock for the driving wheel and transmission shift, press the brake, put the shift in Neutral (N) and start the engine. Im not sure if your Ford Edge has the no key starting button or fob, there is a procedure to release the locks and be able to drive, should be in your drivers manual, but, again; the intention is to avoid moving the car without Stop Lights.
I hope this helps. Happy Holidays and take care.

no override button. if all the fuses are good, then if i remember there is a switch by the shift lever that when you step on the brake it enables you to move the shifter.good luck

Ford countour battery dead and shift into netral

If all else fails, try locating a parking lock override button or hole near the shifter. Most vehichles now have them, except for those with shift knobs located on the steering column, which should release simply by holding the break all the way while turning the key to the "run" position. If you need to located the unlock button, I'll include some pictures of the override button location on my van as an example to know what to look for.

1. locate the hole.
2. Remove the cover/plug if present.
3. Insert a narrow object such as a car key.
4. Hold brake down.
5. Press inward and hold with one hand, while using the other hand to shift out of park.

(On some cars, the ignition switch has to be in the "run" position to move the shifter, so best to use a different key or a screwdriver to insert into the shift release hole/button.)
