Car smokes, wont stay running

I have a 1989 Nissan Maxima. Recently I had my alternator replaced. While I was driving home, the car died while I had stopped twice at a light. Then I noticed it began smoking white and smelled, soon after it died out completely. 12 hours later I put water in my radiator which was pretty empty (I didnt notice a leak), I also checked my oil which was fine, and added more gas to the tank. After jumping the battery it will start but dies again without tapping the gas.

I have a 2001 Nissan maxima gle 3.0 and my battery light is staying on I checked the positive and the the vehicle stays running what could be a few more reasons why it would stay on

It could be a bad alternator. Start the car, then try disconnecting the positive battery cable to the battery after the car is running. If it stays running, the alternator is good. If the car dies, alternator no good.

Sounds like you have a serpentine belt that has locked up and burnt or broke. Probably due to an accessory like alternator AC, compressor, idler or tensioner failure.

1989 maxima overheadted now wont stay started

If you got it this hot you will need the engine torn down and repaired or replaced. Have a shop look at this and give you a preliminary diagnosis on cost, it may be more than the car is worth.

My 99 Nissan Maxima wont start with out a jump?

It could be that your battery is weak or the alternator went bad and caused the battery to die. Most autoparts stores will test your battery and sometimes the alternator for free if you can drive your car there.
If not, you can jump the car, and undo the battery cables. If the vehicle stays on you will at least know that the alternator is good and the battery is weak.

You may need a new alternator because if they are messed up, they will drain batteries and make it hard to start or keep your car running. Also get the starter checked because that can make it hard to start the car too.

Make sure all of the cords were connected back to the battery so that everything will work properly as they did before the alternator was changed.
