Vacuum leak? Check all of the hoses that run from the carb, check all of the rubber plugs that go on the side of the manifold....sounds like you have a leak some where.

88 ranger 2.3L 2wd ext. cab have to start repeatedly and then jerks and stalls

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. Look for position sensor with intermittent fault. Check all wire connectors for loose or dirty.

Intermittent stalling

Two - from experience
1. Your fuel filter is 98% clogged - something sloshes around and it goes to 100% clogged and your stop. When you stop, that last 2% falls to the bottom of the filter. You fire it up and get going - repeat.
2. Your coil pack is bad and or the wires. The coil gets hot - plastic expands - begins to arc - and you stop

1 is more likely I think, especially if the service engine light is not on.

Was the fuel pump checked out?
Have a scope put on it,to check for a worn armature. May also be binding up mechanically
Also check TPS Sensor data or scope it

Ford el falcon stalls on idle

don't laugh but there is a hose that runs from the inlet manifold to the mapping sensor. mine had a split in it at the motor end made the engine think it needed more fuel. replaced the hose no more problem
