...but I can't seem to find one for less than $30 online. Does anyone know of a way to get my hands on one cheaper, or any free PDFs floating around online? Thanks!

I would suggest looking on an online auction site or perhaps even an online VW forum. There were many of these Cabriolets produced and a used grille should be easy to obtain and inexpensive as well. They are also very easy to replace on your own. Just a few simple clips and screws are all that keep it in place.
hello there
most of the cabriolet in 1990 are electrical.
If you like to open manualy it is posible only if you disconnect the arms which are attached to the motors on each side .The arms and motors are located behind the side panels.Disconnect only the connection to the arms not the arms from the motors, there is an allen head bolt to be removed.Aftrer this you will still need to operate electricaly the two (on the top of the windshield ) el.motors(latches).
If you use the switch to detach the top from the windshield then you can finish the openning by hands(manualy) this is the only way it would work for you.
My roof just stopped working this morning. My owners manual says that on the left rear side, in the trunk, when you pull back the carpeting there is a place for a crank. You use the spark plug wrench that came with the tool kit, although it is not with my car.
