Newspaper in the floorboard with 3 drops of vanilla extract works good also they make some excellent foaming cleaners you spray directly in the vents to was down the ducts and clean evap ? good luck
Short of removing and potentially even replacing it,some sprays like BG Frigi-Fresh might help some but will really only mask the issue. I would try to find a rental commercial ozone generator which is fantastic for smoke odors. I've had these running inside cars for litterally hours for major odor problems. You will need to run the vehicles fan with the "circ" button depressed to flow ozone through the system and vehicle interior.Otherwise I have removed the evaporator coil from the housing and soaked in water/ bleach solution obviously getting no moisture inside the evap coil(seal off tight) but this is quite the task and refrigeration must be recovered.
It shouldnt smell just put some air freshner in the vents
