1995 GMC Sierra 5.7 liter stalls and is hard starting occasionally. I have replaced fuel pump and sending unit, fuel filter and fuel pump relay. When this happens the fuel pump may whine for a few seconds or not at all. After a few attempts to restart the engine it eventually will start. The engine runs great (when it runs)

Thanks for the reply. This truck was doing this prior to me replacing these parts. It ran great for 6 weeks and now it happening again. I found a small gauge red wire under the fuel pump relay that was dead ended with a spade connector near the firewall under the fuse box (under the hood). i secured it so it wouldn't touch anything. I would like to know what the red wire is intended for.

Even though parts are new they also come with defects so it sounds as if when you turn the key you hear it working and other times not at all hmmm connections are tight ? could be faulty fuel pump or relay .

2000 gmc Sierra starts but stalls

Check the fuel pressure while its running. It sounds like the fuel filter is stopping up. Fuel filter should be changed every 50 thousand miles or so. If the filter is bad it won't be long until the fuel pump has to be replaced (located inside the fuel tank)! It's a lot easier to replace the filter before the pump is damaged!

You should not see any voltage after the 2-second prime until you actually start cranking the engine. If you don't see power on the grey wire when cranking, try jumpering across the fuel pump relay terminals
