I need to replace the serpentine belt on my 2000 Dodge Avenger, I have the belt and can't afford the manual they want you to buy also. My motor is a 6 cylinder.

It's spring activated. Look for a pulley at the end of a lever. That's the tensioner pulley. Put a wrench/socket on it and move it away from the belt. Use caution, as I stated, it's spring loaded/activated. That's how it keeps constant pressure on the serpentine belt. Check under the hood for a routing diagram for re-installation. Or draw a quick sketch.

What size of motor, do you have a/c and which belt are you replacing? Not sure about your engine size since you did not list it so please pick the applicable motor:
Sebring Coupe And Avenger (2.5L VIN N Engine)
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Loosen the tension pulley locknut.
Rotate the adjusting bolt to decrease the belt tension.
Remove the drive belt from the engine.
To install:
Position the replacement belt around the pulleys, making sure the belt routing is correct.
Adjust the belt by rotating the adjusting bolt until the correct tension is reached. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section for belt adjustment.
Once the desired tension is reached, secure the locknut. Recheck the belt tension.
After the belt is installed and adjusted properly, tighten the locknut to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
Connect the negative battery cable.
2.0 DOHC
Power Steering Pump And A/C Belt
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Loosen the tension pulley locknut.
Rotate the adjusting bolt to decrease the belt tension.
Remove the drive belt from the engine.
To install:
Position the replacement belt around the pulleys, making sure the belt routing is correct.
Adjust the belt by rotating the adjusting bolt until the correct tension is reached. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section for belt adjustment.
Once the desired tension is reached, secure the locknut. Recheck the belt tension.
After the belt is installed and adjusted properly, tighten the locknut.
