Cannot shift out of park while depressing brake pedal and button on Shifter. (Center console). Replaced the solenoid under the gear shift and brake light switch under pedal. I have to physically release the lock under the console. I would hate to be in an emergency situation. Help! 2003 Aviator

2007 Impala stuck in park and gear override silver button won't work. Can't figure out the problem please help

If your 2007 Impala is stuck in park and the gear override silver button doesn't work, there may be a few potential problems that are causing the problem. Here are some common causes and troubleshooting solutions you can try: Brake light switch: The most common cause of this problem is a faulty brake light switch. The brake light switch is responsible for sending a signal to the shift interlock solenoid to release the shifter when the brake pedal is depressed and can prevent the shifter from releasing if the switch does not operate properly. Make sure your brake lights work by pressing on the brake pedal. If they don't work, it's probably a brake light switch issue that needs to be replaced. Shift Interlock Solenoid: The shift interlock solenoid is a mechanism that prevents the shifter from moving without pressing the brake pedal If the solenoid is faulty or a blown fuse can cause the shifter to go into park. Check the fuse connected to the shift interlock system and replace if necessary. If the fuse is good, the solenoid may need to be replaced. Shift Cable: The shift cable connects the shifter to the transmission and allows you to change gears. Damaged, loose, or misaligned cables can prevent the shifter from leaving the parking space. Inspect the shift cable for any obvious issues and make sure it is securely attached to the shifter and transmission. Shift lock control module: Some vehicles have a shift lock control module that ensures proper operation of the shift interlock system. Malfunction of this module can cause the problem. It may be necessary to use a diagnostic scan tool to check for any error codes associated with the module. Ignition switch: Faulty ignition under certain conditions

2007 Pontiac Wave. Shifter lockout engaged. Power windows won't work. Dash lights also out. Was able to unlock shifter with a small screw driver and get car home. Ignition key won't go into park.

There is a shift solenoid that functions when the brake pedal is depressed. When the ignition is turned on and the brake pedal is depressed the shift solenoid pin retracts allowing the shift to be placed into gear. Using a screw driver only depresses the lever to move the shifter to place it into gear. The ignition key will not go back into park because the pin on the solenoid is extended preventing the shifter to be put into park. The solenoid must be replaced to get everything back to normal.

Gears won't change. Can anybody provide some useful advice. ?

Automatics have a gear shift safety solenoid that locks the gearshift/transmission in park unless the brake pedal is depressed. This is to prevent people from dropping into a gear from park and rolling into traffic or backing up over someone unexpectedly. When you press the brake pedal you should be able to hear a clicking sound coming from under the gear shift lever. If you dont hear the sound then the solenoid may need to be replaced. The other possibility is needing to replace the brake pedal position switch (usually attached to the pedal assembly or behind the brake pedal assembly) which tells the shifter solenoid to activate when the pedal is depressed.

Shifter is stuck in park. had to remove little cover over hole, by the shifter, to insert key into hole, to get shifter to remove shifter from park. what causes this and is it something i can fix on my...

I believe this vehicle is equipped with a shift lock that necessitates depressing the brake pedal before it can be shifted out of "Park". This is a safety feature designed into almost every car made nowadays to prevent unintended movement of the vehicle when shifting out of "Park". The Shift Lock solenoid is triggered by the brake light switch located near the top of the brake pedal arm. Starting with the "basics", check to see if the brake lights are working (they should illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed. If the brakes lights do not come on. then proceed to check the brake/stop light fuse. Replace if needed. Once the brake lights are functioning, the shift lock should "disengage" and allow you to shift out of "Park" when the brake pedal is pressed. If the fuses are okay, but still no brake lights, then the Brake Light Switch may need to be replaced.

Brake lights working but won't shift out of "Park"? Check for a separate fuse for the Shift Lock Solenoid. Replace if needed. Otherwise the Shift Lock Solenoid may need to be replaced. This will require disassembly of the console to access the part.

My mercury mariner starts fine but wont shift out of park. Mostly only does this after sitting awhile, it's a 2006 model year with center console shift. The shift button on shifter wont depress.

There is a shifter solenoid that prevents it from being shifted out of park without your foot on the brake pedal. The solenoid may be bad or your brake pedal switch may be bad.

When I start engine then depress brake pedal and try to depress shift lever button I can't get it ou of park. This happens 6 times out of 10.

In the area of the shifter (in the center console), there is a shift lock solenoid that is activated by the brake switch. This solenoid prevents shifting out of the Park position unless the brake pedal is depressed. Your problem could be either the brake switch or the solenoid. I would try replacing the switch first.

Cannot shift out of park without using the over ride button under the center console. What is causing this?

Check fuses could be blown fuse. Or another possibility could be brake pedal switch. Brake pedal must be depressed to release shifter from park. Also try and check voltage at solenoid that releases the shifter from park. The solenoid should be located under the shifter, power should only be there when brake is depressed. If voltage is not present with or with out brake depressed than check fuse and switches before solenoid. If voltage is present with brake depressed and no action occurs at the solenoid than that definitely means it is bad. hope you get it fixed..

Can't get my transmission out of park

If it has a center console there should be a small round plug next to the shifter remove the plug and put a screw driver in the hole to release the shift inter lock system. It is a security feature that will not allow you to shift from park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Whe you depress the brake pedal it sends a voltage signal to the shift interlock solenoid which then allows it to unlock the shifter allowing you to shift. Check to see if you have votage at this solenoid when the brake pedal is depressed if you do have voltage then change out the solenoid.

I am unable to get my 2001 spectre into gear. I

If it has a center console inside the center console is a shift interlock solenoid which when the brake pedal is depressed sends a voltage signal to the shift interlock solenoid which then unlocks the shifter allowing you to shift it. It may be bad look into it. You can also manually unlock the shifter by pulling the small plug on the console next to the shifter then sticking a screwdriver down in there far enough to un lock the shifter they made that for this reason.
