Knocking noise 2005 jetta, intermittent, worse when load is taken off the engine. First thought was CV axle, however with load off and rotating wheels the sound is not made. Transmission guy thinks it is a suspension problem but the noise sounds rotational. An comments?
Always look for cause & effect. There was a flat last week, so wheel was taken on & off. It turns out the noise was two loose lugs, something that eluded four good mechanics. It should have been thoroughly checked. Noises like these on four wheel drives could several different things. A bearing, CV axle, or the differential, or bearings in the differential. A wheel bearing will make different sounds when making a turn. A CV axle is a constant sound. Differential bearings can come and go, depending on if it is a bearing for the axle or a pinion bearing. Axle side bearings usually make a constant noise. The differential can also come and go. Depends on acceleration or slowing down. All these sounds are also with a vibration. Slight to harsh.
jack up front left on level ground ,support and chock rear wheels and set park brake ---look and check the cv axle for leaks, tears or damage -put in neutral and watch axle should turn smoothly turn steering wheel to left and rotate tire again watching axle if their is binding or grinding or studder movement than axle is damaged and needs to be replaced
Sounds like you have stripped splines, damaged CV joint or popped axle retaining clip. jack one wheel at time, run slowly in drive with brakes off. the offending wheel will not rotate but axle will. if gearbox/diff axle should not rotate.
If you can figure out what side it is coming from, it is probably the velocity joint in the half shaft (drive shaft) going to the wheel. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.
Is the noise apparent when you are making a turn? It sounds like you may have a CV joint problem. When they put new tires on did the installer mentioned that you needed your cv boot or axle replace?
it sure sounds like wheel bearings, however, the clicking/knocking sound is more related to the cv joints. If the spindle nut was loose, it would account for a knocking sound/feel as well. Have the bearings checked before you spend crazy amounts on cv joints.
does it only make the sound when the car is moving ? but not stopped running still ? if only when you are moving under power then possibly a CV Joint or axle bearing, if it makes the noise when you a are at a stand still engine running then you amy have a issue inside the motor or transmission... if you need more advice feel free to comment...
