We have tried replacing the oil control valve with no success and now we are being told it may need the timing chain replaced. But why would the fault not happen all the time if the timing chain is stretched? Any advice most appreciated.
Hi there it can be the chain, just inspect your driving mode first, if it change normal if you start with a leveled low acceleration and when you dump accelerator pedal from start it doesn't not change normal or when it get hot it doesn't not change anymore obviously this can be chain but if it want to change into the next gear and fail it will obviously make a slippery noise, also check if it leaks transmission oil some is oil pressure caused by the pump fitted inside the transmission between torque converter and transmission have all this test done
Associated with the oil control valve is a filter. If you have not also changed this then you should consider doing so as a first step.
Over time the oil will degrade and build up a sludge of mostly metal particles which will reduce the effectiveness of the filter as they collect there so the oil could properly need to be changed. When you do this use a flushing oil to clean out any existing sludge. Follow the instructions on the can. Only replace the filter after flushing is complete.

you are experiencing early to mid stage transmission failure.

check hoses for splits...i had the same problem.

Bit of a long shot, but check the output of the throttle position sensor with a multimeter.
Also, check that the low range switch isn't continually reporting that you are in low range. The gearbox computer adopts a VERY harsh shift pattern in low range, holding gears until approx. 3500 RPM and even then producing very hard shifts.
Try unplugging the connector that carries the low range sense signal from the transfer box under the vehicle and see if that makes a difference.
SOURCE: hi i have a 1993
two choices renew auto box ,fit a manual gearbox or scrap car and buy a newer vehicle ,Parts are a problem with these cars ,just not available
SOURCE: gearbox fault light and cruise not available
The only thing that will cause a cruise control fault is a loose vacuum hose ussually on the breather hose coming from the valve cover in front to the throttle body. As for the remainder, shut off the car and restart to get you home and avoid the limp home mode. That in itself is an electronic fault in the ground system. Check you coils or replace them with a new set of plugs (autolite double platinum recommendes.) Clean any grounds you may have and then start you engine. You will notice there is no problem then. Run a diagnostic tool to see if there is any fault with grounded sensors like the O2 to keep that from happening again. Don't get the tranny replaced cause thats all the dealership wants to do and charge you $5k. Its not the actual cause. Good luck and let us know if there is anything else we can do here at fixya.
