2002 pontiac montana fuel gauge

The fuel gauge reads full, till the low fuel light comes on and then it will drop to empty. typically when it still has half a tank of gas. If I ignore it the next time I start it up it starts on full and stays there til it does it again, I estimate it has 4 gallons of fuel left at that time.

I replaced the fuel pump assymbly not once, but 3 times and my
fuel gauge still tracks from Full to Empty in 10 seconds. So I know
that the problem is not in the fuel sending unit. The problem must
be elsewhere...but where? Who knows. Could be a broken wire or
the fuel gauge itself

It could always be a bad fuel level sensor which is part of the fuel pump in that vehicle, but GM vehicles around that year are known for failures in the instrument cluster as well, is there any other readings in the panel that seem unusual at all?

Fuel gauge reads full when started then when put into gear drops to empty

Wiring, ground at the tank, a loose or corroded connector somewhere. If the gauge moves up & down significantly when the vehicle is "bumped" forward & backward, you MIGHT suspect the sending unit... but if it always reads empty when in gear, that wouldn't be the problem.

Fuel gauge is always full, if left running in park fuel drops to empty and goes to full when driven

steve i am a lifer.i started at 15 now 58 and still working on cars.i am shure what you have here is a wire or more rubbing against your stearing some where and you have a dead short.,where the wire is bare against metal.in that case you would have it read full when you are in drive and when you shift into park it looses contact and reads empty

I have a 2004 pontiac montana. for about two years the fuel guage would fold over and read 125 degrees when the tank is full. it woulld stay there until tank was empty and the needle would drop to empty,...

It could be a bad fuel gauge in the dash unit, but....
Usually it's "The bad".
The fuel level sending wipe arm and windings on the fuel sender wear and send erratic readings. The only cure is a replacement fuel gauge sender.
The check engine light should not be related to the erratic fuel readings.
"The good".
If you have over 200,000kms or 120,000 miles on your van you need a new fuel pump anyway,so have a complete assembly put in which will have a new fuel sender on it.

@[email protected] have 2002 pontiac montana mini-van...i filled up the tank above the full mark...got in ...started it up...it went up to full...then dropped down to empty and low fuel light stays...

It sounds like the fuel tank sending unit is bad. You can try pouring a can of BGK44 into the tank to see if it will clean up some of the deposits that can actually foul the sending unit. If that doesn't work the unit will have to be replaced.

Gas gage read full when empty and sometimes emty

You have a bad fuel level sensor. The fuel tank needs to come out and the sensor replaced. You don`t have to replace the pump assembly. You can get the level sensor separate.I`m not sure if the parts stores have it but I know the dealerships do.Hope this helps.Good luck.

2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.
