On a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, the interlock is a cable without a solenoid. There is no release on the shift handle on this model. The cable end at the brake pedal has a little retainer that slips out of position and causes the cable to not pull the interlock lever forward. Once is slips out you might as well replace the cable because it will happen again.

If you accidentilly or purposely lock the shift knob there is usually a small key lock on the console by the shifter that you can insert your starting key into and turn and it releases the locked shifter

There is a switch on the brake pedal shaft that releases the lock on the shift lever. Check all the fuses and then check the switch to see if it is loose of defective.

Safety system - shift interlock . Won't let driver move gear selector unless foot is pushing on the brake pedal . part's involved (FEM) front electronic module , brake switch .
Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system consists of:
  • a shift lock actuator .

Shift lock release

There should two brake switches located above the brake petal, one is designed to activate the rear brake lamp relay, the second would be the park/neutral safety switch which may be defective and failing to activate the shift handle release relay. You can test this by first turn the ignition key forward then jump the two wires behind the switch, you should then hear the transmission shift handle lock release. If this is heard, the switch has failed and requires replacement.

I have a 1990 toyota p/u 4x4 automatic. It stuck in park. Will not release to drive. What is solution

Repair the shift lock mechanizm (either the linkage or an electrical issue) or to get by, use the shift lock release which is typically a small hole next to the shifter that may or may not be marked as the shift lock release. Place a key or the like into the hole to release the shifter from park.
