There is an unknown high pitch alarm (sound) that has just started over the past few weeks. The sounds lasts for about 10 seconds then stops. Can't figure where or what is causing it.

Sounds like your alarm system. If you know how reset it or unplug it and plug it back in see if that helps or you can always just leave it unplugged. That should stop the beeping.
Could be a plugged fuel filter; very old gas (car has been sitting unused for some time) has pasted through fuel filter and clogged it. Fuel pump in gas tank is weak and the electric motor in fuel pump runs, gets hot and stops. Have someone listen behind the back bumper away from muffler. The sound of a fuel pump can be heard close to the underside of fuel tank (high pitch whine). If the sound stops before the car dies...that would indicate a faulty fuel pump.
You may need to check the belts on your car's power steering section. Make sure the belts are tight and not worn out. Check for cracks on the belt and if loose, tighten it. There is also a product called Automotive belt dressing that you can spray on the belt to make it stick more easily to the pulley it is supposed to turn.
You could remove the serpentine belt and see if the noise continues, then check each component one at a time. You describe a slipping belt because the alternator pulls hard for the first few seconds after you start the engine.
take it back to mazda and get it looked at.
mine is the same goes off for no reason when i lock the car mazda do not know what is causing the problem but get your name down on the list for the parts when they do work it out because by the sounds of it every mazda 2 is going to have to have the alarm fixed when they solve the problem
ok are you ready, first turn the ign on but do not turn the key to the start position, the alarm should sound, as soon as the alarm stops sounding, count 10 seconds then start the vehicle, this will disable the alarm unless you set it with the remote, if that doesent disable it repeat above again it has to be 10 second count after alarm stops..
