Subaru impreza 1993 power steering leak

1- Power steering leakage on feeder line, about halfway between pump and rack (leak was on a joint between two separate lines) ... lost a lot of power steering fluid.
2- I cutted and replaced with a rubber hose (from a fuel line repair kit)
3- One week later : same thing happened : lost a lot of fluid from the newly installed hose, by leaking from the newly installed hose...
4- Symptoms : Multi-groove accessory belt is slipping on the power steering pump wheel. Looks like a very high pressure is built into the feeder line (relieve valve stuck?? hoses or drive-rack blocked??)

YOU CANT USE A REGULAR FUEL LINE ON POWER STEERING AS A HIGH PRESSURE HOSE.BECAUSE POWER STEERING PRESSURE IS 1000 PSI.YOU HAVE TO BUY THE POWER STEERING HIGH PRESSURE HOSE IT HAS NUMBER OF PLIES MATERIAL WEAVES TO MAKE IT STRONG.IT WAS MADE FOR POWER STEERING HIGH PRESSURE.YOU DONT HAVE A BLOCKAGE .THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE JUST WORE OUT.REPLACE IT .IT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM.

How do I find a leak in power steering I can't see it from the top.Within 20 minutes fluid is gone.Cant see any leak but puddle on ground.

Did you already checked on the steering rack?
Maybe you need to check from the bottom vehicle also. The leakage commonly occur at the hose joint and sometimes it occur at oil seal on steering rack.

Rack and pinion? have play in wheel no sign of leaks new power steering pump installed

Hi Gunny, If your vehicle is fitted with rack and pinion steering also check the rack ends for play. The rack ends are the rods which the tie rod ends screw onto. The other end fits onto the rack of the rack and pinion. To work on those you will need to remove the rubber boots and loosen the locking washer, they can then be loosened with a wrench. If they are worn the play will be evident in the steering. When replacing them also replace the rubber boots. If the boots are worn and road grime and dust enters, you will see leakage from the rack and pinion in the near future. I always thought the Dakota was fitted with a steering box? Regards John

Replaced the power steering pump still hard to turn

If the pump is ok then the problem lies in the power rack and pinion unit. This is a common problem, and is caused by internal "O" ring seal leakage due to a scored piston bore inside the rack and pinion. You can try having the system fluid flushed clean and adding a of bottle LUCUS brand power steering fluid conditioner, I have seen this correct the problem. I have personally used the product and it works, not all the time but it is worth a try, the replacement of the steering rack is about a $900.00 job parts and labor.

What engine size? how many miles on the vehicle?

1: Leaking Water pump - How do I notice this in the car ?

Typically you will see a lot of dried up coolant around the water pump. If the coolant level gets low enough it will cause the vehicle to over heat and potentially do a lot of damage.

Water pumps are extremely common on these years.

2. Under Steering components it says Rack is Leaking, Passenger bellow torn open.

The rack is the part that turns the wheels left and right. If a bellow is torn and there is fluid coming out of it than the seals in the rack have gone bad. Eventually enough fluid will leak out and cause the power steering to no longer work and possibly ruin the power steering pump.

3. LF Strut /stunt is seeping.

It means that the oil on the strut is starting to leak out. The strut is what absorbs the bumps in the road and holds your tires down on the road. Eventually the strut will loose its ability to do this and the tires will start to cup. It is not uncommon for struts to show signs of leaking and is usually the first indicator that the strut is starting to fail.

Hope that helped.

I'm having problems with the power steering. Not sure if it's the pump or the rack and pinion. I have removed the tie-rods and turned the wheels manually and there is no stiffness in the ball joints or...

Yes, there is a way to test it but it requires a special set of pressure gauges. I will tell you however, that pump failures on GM vehicles are rare. (unless they are leaking externally) Internal leakage (without leaking on the ground) in rack & pinion units is quite common.

Is steering loss due to low power steering fluid?

yes could be one reason-loose belt at pump, air in lines ,pump going bad ,front steering parts/components bent, damaged,or broken are others but check and fill to proper level first than turn completely from one side to other side to clear any air in lines do a few times

How do i bleed my power steering rack on subaru legacy rs turbo

if its been a week, there should no tbe any air. if its heavy, the rack could be bad, or weak pump????? any noises? air will usually cause a whiney noise, and there will be air whipped, foamy fluid in the pump. A pump pressure regulator could be stuck open, not allowing full pressure? I would have a shop diagnose it, tell them the history and see if they can find a cause.
