Where is the sensor / harmonic balancer?

I think that my problem may be in area, but I am not sure where to find it on the motor. The car doesn't start/no spark. I have been told that the problem may lie in this area, but I have been unable to locate the sensor.

Oil leak around harmonic balancer

probably the crank seal that the balancer runs against to keep the oil in the motor. you will have to pull the balancer off then pry the seal out and tap the new one into the timing cover. take a look to make sure as it could be the oil pan gasket. clean area and run car until you see oil coming out.

How do you replace front crank seal on 02 avalanche

The front crank seal is behind the oil pump on the LS series motors. There is also a seal at the crankshaft and harmonic balancer on the front timing cover. This is typical leak area. You can carefully remove the harmonic balancer with a puller, replace the timing cover seal and reinstall. Make sure not to pinch the seal lip You will have to have a special tool in order to re-install the balancer, which is extra long to squeeze it on the tapered shaft. I do not think the other crank seal is an issue since it drains to the pan behind the oil pump.

I need to chance the crank sensor on a '96 buick park ave. 3800 v-6, what am i going to have to take off to do it ?

Passenger tire, passenger inner well cover, serpentine belt, pulley that attaches to harmonic balancer , nut for harmonic balancer, then harmonic balancer. Sensor is screwed to engine. Disconnect battery prior to and before install of sensor. The 3800 has a special balancer puller designed just for it, not sure were you could rent one it is a specalty tool.

I changed the harmonic balancer and now it is terribly out of time. Didn't touch any timing belts, distributor or the like. Any advice?

There may be a magnet on the harmonic balancer for the crankshaft sensor,

The cam and crank sensor call for spark to the plugs..

Some cars you need a Harmonic Balancer Installer Adapter,
to make sure everything is lined up and gaped..

Check the crankshaft sensor for damage from inproper install, also check the wires going to sensor,, some times the harmonic balancer are such a Pain!! to come off the sensor or wires get damage in the battle.

Crank sensor is hitting balancer. One of the interupter blades may be bent. 3800's do not have timing chain or gear problems. Now a 3.8 will. Does yours say 3800 on top of engine? These ar two different engines.

Locate crank sensor on 1990 buick century

Hello, the crank position sensor or (CPS) censor is located directly behind the harmonic balancer (or fly wheel at the very bottom). The sensor is located on the right side of the harmonic balancer when facing the front of the motor. You must remove the harmonic balancer to replace the sensor. You must also re-align the sensor with 30 thousands of an inch tolorence, or your car may idle rough or may not start. I own a 1990 Buick Century and just replaced my CPS sensor last month. There is a trick I learned to reinstalling the new sensor. Let me know if you need that information.
