1998 Ford Taurus won't stay idled.

I have a 1998 Ford Taurus with 73K miles on it. The vehicle was running fine until I tried to start it the day after driving it back to San Antonio from Austin (just under 70 miles). It will start but harder than usual. After it's started, it won't stay idled to keep the car running. While slightly idling the car, the rpm gauge goes up and down. This is all with the AC on. The AC blows well, but doesn't seem to get cold fast anymore.

Checking the oil was the first thing I did. I added a qt, let it sit for awhile and the problem still exist.

It sounds to me that your 4th gear is just starting to slip. It will gradually get worse until you are forced to overhaul the transmission.

My recommendations:

Clear the codes and drive the vehicle while at the same time, putting some money away so you will have the funds for an overhaul. It may do like this for a few weeks or several months, but it is well on its way,,,

Yes and the way it runs.
Disconnect and plug the vacuum lines to the EGR, and see if you still have idle and driveability issues. If not replace the Valve.

If the battery was dead after it stalled, then the alternator is not charging, check the alternator anyway,it needs to be charging for the engine to stay running.

Engine starts but wont stay running, 1998 ford 5.4 litre 125,000 miles. will run with foot on gas (wont idle)

Replace the throttle position sensor, this sensor controls idle speed and is most likely faulty.

Car stalls at traffic lights and stop signs

Besides cleaning the sensor, you may want to look at the vacumn lines on the vehicle. They have a tendency to crack along the side of the line causing small vacumn leaks. This can have a big effect on the idling of the vehicle. You may also adjust the throttle body for the idle flow to the engine. Good Luck, RAC
