Toyota 22r starts hard and floods. Repalced

the carb needs to be cleaned and kitted
fully. just like we did from 1920 to 1985.
SET THE CHOKE TO LEAN WHEN CAR IS COLD
THEN ADD CHOKE IF YOU NEED MORE COLD.
THE FUEL MAY BE BAD
AND IF IS OR WAS BAD FUEL, FILTER FUEL IS PACKED UP AND SO IS THE WHOLE CARB INSIDE.
FINDING CARB PARTS (AND KITS) 2023 IS NOT EASY
THIS IS WHY NO CARB CARS SEEN ON THE ROAD.
36 YEAR OLD CAR AND CARB.
PARTS ARE RARE.
EVEN THE SERVICE MANUAL IS RARE.
IF LUCKY JUST CLEANING IT CAN WORK
LUCK HAPPENS.

Could be one of the following problems:
Fuel supply to carburetor:

• Choke operating
• Flooding
• Needle Valve sticking
• Vacuum Hose
• Fuel cut solenoid not opening
• Secondary throttle valve not closed

Ignition Problems:

• Ignition Coil
• Igniter
• Distributor

Spark Plugs Faulty
Vacuum Leaks

• PCV line
• EGR line
• MC line
• Intake manifold
• CMH

Low Compression

carb ajustment is off--issues in the float causing it to flood--cud be sticking--get a haynes manual or library sec629 has shopbooks

and old carb based engine
if engine has good compression, and spark is good and timed.
its a bad carb.

3:all air emulsion tubes inside clear.?
4: choke set right.?

I am original owner of 1986Toyota Pickup 2wd caRB. 4SP MAN. SHORT BASE MFG.IN JAPAN. I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH ANYTHING UNDER THE HOOD OR IDLE OR ACELLERATION. iT RUNS JUST LIKE THE DAY i BOUGHT IT IN oCT. 1986. i NEVER ADJUSTED CARB OR CHOKE OR CLEANED IT iT HAS ALL ORIGNIAL PARTS EXCEPTTHE STARTER, BATTERY AND WATER PUMP GASKET.

Seems like the choke is not turning on. The 22r uses a carb if I'm not mistaken. pump it a couple of times then try pressing the pedal completely down before trying to start it. Then press the pedal half way down. the point is to set the choke when you press the pedal all the way down.

ok, its and old jeep, cranks but will not start.

carb fueled right? crank it wide open throttle to clean the flood
and block open the choke, if CARB has auto choke, if manual choke make sure its open. (push in knob... called choke)
fuses first. test them.
first check for spark in all cylinders.
if you have spark on all , then its flooded.
if no spark on one try a new spark plug and wire.
if all spark is dead , do the tuneup. now. all spark parts.
if spark is dead, check it at the coil, ? good there? or not.
that is a start.
if the carb is bad, we cant cover rebuilding it here.

stalls while driving has over 50 causes.
but bad spark or flooding tops list. (assumes engine is ok)

I recommend to remove carb and send to a specialist to have rebuilt or reconditioned. Cleaning it may not be enough. A carb that old may need to be serviced. This would be your starting point. The service shop can test it "outside" of vehicle.

in your carburetor there is a priming passage. look in there with the air cleaner out and pump the butterfly it should squirt gas. if it doesn't then you need to open the top part of the carb and clean the hole with a hair clip. if this is not the problem it will be the choke but I'm 70 percent that this is the problem.

sounds like trash between needle valve and seat try tapping on side of float bowl, if not take off air horn ( top ) remove float clean needle valve and seat and bowl keep a eye out for trash
