The 3.5 liter engine in the 1997 Dodge Intrepid has its water pump driven by the backside of the timing belt. If your car has over 100,000 miles on it since the timing belt was replaced, it should be done now, at the same time you do the water pump. Replacement of the timing belt on that engine is complicated and difficult and requires special tools, so I'd recommend most people refer the job to a SKILLED mechanic.
If the car has the 3.3 Liter engine, that has one of the easiest watre pump jobs I've ever done!
Make sure your cooling fans are working !!!! there is fuses and relays that could fail and cause your car to over heat, you may not have a problem while driving down the hwy BUT" in town and stopping, the temp would go up!

check first if you are loosing water or cooling fluids on your radiator. There may be a leak or the radiator cap may no longer prevent the steam from escaping. check the radiator fans if they are turning. You can check the fan if it is working by removing the temp sensor at the lower radiator hose. The fan should turn on by then.

a timing belt. the water pump uses it to turn it and you got to take it off to change the pump anyway so you might as well get a new one.also the hydralic timing belt tensioner should be replaced at the same time just to be sure.you will need anti freeze of course as well
