The 3.5 liter engine in the 1997 Dodge Intrepid has its water pump driven by the backside of the timing belt. If your car has over 100,000 miles on it since the timing belt was replaced, it should be done now, at the same time you do the water pump. Replacement of the timing belt on that engine is complicated and difficult and requires special tools, so I'd recommend most people refer the job to a SKILLED mechanic.

If the car has the 3.3 Liter engine, that has one of the easiest watre pump jobs I've ever done!

Make sure your cooling fans are working !!!! there is fuses and relays that could fail and cause your car to over heat, you may not have a problem while driving down the hwy BUT" in town and stopping, the temp would go up!

check first if you are loosing water or cooling fluids on your radiator. There may be a leak or the radiator cap may no longer prevent the steam from escaping. check the radiator fans if they are turning. You can check the fan if it is working by removing the temp sensor at the lower radiator hose. The fan should turn on by then.

a timing belt. the water pump uses it to turn it and you got to take it off to change the pump anyway so you might as well get a new one.also the hydralic timing belt tensioner should be replaced at the same time just to be sure.you will need anti freeze of course as well

I have a bad water pump in my 1997 dodge intrepid 3.5l . where do I start ???

The water pump is driven from the timing belt, which would need to be replaced also.
You would need a repair book or shop manual for the procedures.

How to replace water pump 99 2.7

Hope this helps you....

Instructions
  1. Prepare the Dodge Intrepid
    • 1 Lay out a drop cloth underneath the Dodge Intrepid to protect the floor from coolant spills. Designate an area to lay out each part alongside its bolts and connecting hoses and wires. Use a drop cloth here as well, some of the parts will have traces of grease and coolant.
    • 2 Disconnect the negative battery cable, using a screwdriver to unscrew the clamp that secures the cable to the negative (-) post. Pull the cable away from the battery post.
    • 3 Use a jack to elevate the Dodge Intrepid and jack stands to shore up the jack. Release the pressure in the radiator by removing the cap. Take out the drain plug located underneath the radiator. Catch the coolant in a resealable container
    • 4 Use a grease pencil to mark on the timing belt its position in each pulley before removal. This will save time when reinstalling. If needed, replace the timing belt and skip marking the old one.
    Remove the Damaged Pump
    • 5 Locate the water pump on the Dodge Intrepid. It's mounted on the front of the engine block and connected to the radiator and various other parts through a series of hoses. It's rotated by the timing belt. Study these parts, as you'll have to remove them.
    • 6 Disconnect or remove the parts in front of the water pump, using an adjustable wrench. In the most common Dodge Intrepid engine--the 2.7L--you'll find, in order: the upper radiator crossmember, fan module, accessory drive belts, crankshaft damper, timing cover, timing chain and guide wires.
    • 7 Unbolt the water pump from the engine block, using an adjustable wrench. You may have to use a chisel to gently break the seal between the mount and the pump. Discard both the pump and the bolts.
    • 8 Clean off the mounting area with a shop rag.
    Install the New Pump
    • 9 Inspect the new water pump to ensure it's identical to the old pump and free of any metal splinters or debris.
    • 10 Arrange the new water pump on the mount. You won't need sealant for the o-ring on a Dodge Intrepid. Hold the water pump and o-ring in place as you secure it with the new bolts. Tighten them with a torque wrench to 105 inch pounds torque in any order.
    • 11 Install the timing belt and wires, using the grease pencil marks to guide you in installation. Install the rest of the parts in the order removed. The camshaft must be reconnected with a torque wrench at 125 foot pounds torque.
    • 12 Replace the radiator's drain plug and refill the radiator with the amount and type of coolant specified in your owner's manual. Release the jack and jack stands.
    • 13 Attach the negative battery cable to the post and tighten the screw on the clamp. Crank the Dodge Intrepid's engine and check for leaks. Then, close the hood.

Location of water pump

These vehicles have the water pump running off the timing belt or chain, whether you're talking about the 3.5L, 3.3L, or the 2.7L v6's, be very careful with these engines because they are sensitive! I would reccomend also replacing the timing belt or chain carefully. Good luck.

Wheres the water pump at for a 1997 interpid

If you have the 3.5L engine, it is behind the timing belt cover and driven by the timing belt. If you have to replace the water pump on a 3.5L I would strongly suggest replacing the timing belt at the same time. If you have the 3.3L engine it is driven by one of the accessory drive belts and is located at the lower left side of the engine and doesn't require any timing belt work.

How to you install a water pumpon a 3.5 97 dodge

Remove the hood bracket bar, 4bolts, then the fan shroud assembly, then the belts, belt adjuster, and timing covers, line up the cam gears, crank gear to the marks , cam has 1 dot, they line up to timing housing 2 dots, (single dot to middle of the 2 dots), crank has 1 dot to mark on the oil pump housing to your right of crank gear, thats TDC. now remove the timing belt tensioner, 2 bolts, and remove the belt, if the pump has leaked, replace the belt, and tensioner if it is NOT metal Pulley, the fibre one will break down from the antifreeze. its a good idea to replace the water pump housing orings behind it, ac bracket has to come off, as the right cam on engine, this not a retiming iussue with the gear. GOOD LUCK. RDJRP
