Make sure the fan spins so there's nothing in it's way, find the wire plug, and make sure there is a good connection , on the fuse box make sure the fuse is ok, on the radiator there should be a switch with two wires on it, if you touch the two wires together the fan should run if it does the fan is ok , if it dosen't change the switch.

The foward fan only works with ac, sounds like a poor circulation problem ensure the rad is in good condition. You could also try a lower temp thermostat 160 degrees instead of a 190.

Obstructed radiator or plugged radiator, I didn't think that the Liberty had a fan clutch, I thought that it used an electric fan.

In the case of an electric fan there are relays and sensors involved plus the ECM (computer) is also in the mix to make that fan work.

I would suggest having the cooling fan diagnosed before doing anything else.

That's the radiator fan malfunctioning. Check the fan motor itself by conecting direct to battery while disconected from harness. If not OK replace. If OK check the fan switches, These are sensors that turn the fan on when temperature rises. If bad replace.

check wires to tempature censer, follow wires from fan to censor if there ok replace the censor, be sure to disconnect the battery first.

OK, you have addressed the first possibility. There are a few more, each progressively more expensive to fix. First, are the radiator electric cooling fans operating? If you find the vehicle runs ok on the highway, but overheats around town in stop-and-go traffic, it could be that the fans are not running. Quick check for the fans - with the ignition on (the engine doesn't need to be running), move the cooling control to the A/C position. If the fans come on, they are good, but you could still have a fan-related cooling problem. If the fans don't work, you have a problem. If the fans worked, the car runs fine at highway speed but not in town, then suspect the coolant sensor that engages the fans. If the fans work and the car overheats in all conditions, then a system blockage is possible. Blockages occur usually one of two ways: Radiator rust/corrosion, and collapsed radiator hoses. Radiator corrosion will require radiator replacement; if it is blocked badly enough to overheat, flushing it is a waste of effort, and could cause more problems with all the **** you circulate into the engine. If the system is low on water (air in system) it can rise to the top radiator hose and cause it to collapse partially or fully, restricting flow. Some engines have water jackets that extend higher than the radiator cap, so they can trap air. These cars have bleeder ports at these locations to remove to trapped air. Check to see if that is the problem.

if you make the contacts on the plug that connects to the thermo switch, does the fan work (both speeds?)?

if not, then it could be the fan control module or a fuse on there.

There should be a relay controlling them, check the relay comm for power.. You can connect the radiator fan driectly to the battery to prevent over heating. It has two wires, splice them and connect them to the battery via 2 other pieces of wire. In my opinion its very difficult to actually help with this one remotely since we would need to be on spot to test the circuit. I strongly suggest haveing an autoelectrican check this for you. YOu can connect the radiator fan directly to the battery to help you get there..

BTW the radiator contains a thermostat. this turns the fan on and off, of this is faulty you will have the problem you described. check the thermostat in the radiator.
