Alternator isnt charging. Alternator supplies power when vehicle is running. To test, start vehicle and then disconnect battery. If engine dies, you have an alternator problem. Also check wiring to make sure nothing is shorted.

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Windstar----I had battery

Hello, It could be what you said. But if you know the Voltage was too high, you may want to replace the Ignition Relay and the Fuel pump Relay. If the contact points are cooked, they could work intermittently and it would be difficult to test. A bump or a little overheating could cause the contact points to break loose and then work when they cool.

It is good that the "check lights" are off. I always tell my clients that the scans are free at Autozone, Oreillys, and Advance. Some things like Relays may not trigger a light.

Be careful with a Wiggle test, but you may find a short in the wiring by shaking the wiring under the hood. I doubt the Voltage Regulator is causing your current stalling problem. A fully charged Battery without a Regulator or an Alternator would provide an amount of reliable power until the Battery was drawn down.

I hope my Solution is very helpful.

SOURCE: battery light indicator is on?

Oh no..... dont ever try to unhook the battery when the car is running because you can damage alot of elect. componance. But if your light is on then you need to check the connection to ya alter. it may be coroated or just loose. Also make sure your battery cables are clean and tight.

Replaced battery now there is zero juice

Don't assume that a new battery is ok. Personally, I've fitted a new battery to later discover that it was that new battery at fault.

However, it's quite rare ..

If your battery is discharging very quickly irrespective of whether the engine is running or the car is parked - suspect the alternator. Inside the alternator there is a rectifier pack - diodes - if this fails it can allow your battery to discharge very quickly - sometimes within a minute or two, quite literally.

If you can, disconnect the leads from the back of your alternator and charge your battery. Reconnect the battery but not the alternator. If your car starts and continues to start without the battery going flat - your alternator is at fault.

The only other fault that can cause a healthy battery to discharge is a parasitic drain - something is remaining 'live' after the engine is switched off and draining your battery power.

If you drive your car to a spares shop/auto electrician they will be able to tell you within a minute if your alternator is the problem.

Avoid a dead battery

If your battery is discharging while the van is parked up, there's 3 general causes:
  • The battery itself is failing and cannot hold a charge. replacement is the only option.
  • There is a fault within the alternator - either the alternator is not charging or it is allowing the battery to drain because the diodes (the rectifier in the alternator) have failed.
  • There's a parasitic drain of power somewhere. Something is remaining 'live' when the van is parked up - and draining the battery.
Many places will do a free battery check.

How do I fix my Vauxhall combo van 03 plate the battery is showing it charging it will run all day but if you turn it off the battery goes flat in about 15 to 20 mins but if I disconnect it the battery...

Could be a shorted/failed diode in your alternator.

Don't how accessible it is in your van but if possible, use a meter (Chinese have made them affordable) across the battery terminals and quickly remove the heavy cable from the alternator and watch the meter reading.
If it is still falling quickly, the alternator is likely OK and something else is causing the drain.

Most Digital Multimeters have a separate 10 Ampere range via a separate, marked jack; the black lead stays put, the red lead goes to the 10A jack.
Remove the negative battery cable, connect the black lead to the battery terminal, quickly touch the red lead to the loosened battery clamp; this is normally protected by an internal fuse which may blow if the current is well above 10 amperes.
If it doesn't blow. attach the leads so you can start the next step.

This will be a systematic removal and replacement of each fuse, one at a time, until the current reading drops to a low value on the meter indication.
Milliamperes, not normally seen on this meter range, are normal.

If this works, you have narrowed down the culprit to a specific circuit and at that point, you are on your own.

Good luck-

95 chevy g20 van started to lose power while driving and began to spit and sputter

Ck your alternator output, should be between 13.8 and 14.2 volts, A bad alt will cause the battery to discharge when driving, Once voltage drops to a certain level (9.8 I think ) the ecm starts to shut down causing all kinds of strange problems, like running bad ,trans not shifting right, even the radio ! It happened to me in my 95 chev p/u

Sttarted van to let warm up came back in 10 mins.,van not running and had no elec.whatso ever. no horn no lights no dash lighs nothing when try to start checked battery not even 1volt dc .like whole...

Hi Donald,

It sounds to me like your alternator decided to give up the ghost. The battery did not have any voltage because there was probably just barely enough power to get the engine started. Then when the voltage got low enough, your onboard computers could no longer function properly and the engine died. However, the battery continued to discharge because the ignition switch was on and all of the systems were still TRYING to operate. Yes, this will cause the entire electrical system to shut down....No battery power causes everything to stop operating. Without the alternator, there is no way for the battery to get recharged.

What you must do is to recharge the battery and test it to make sure it is not dammaged or shorted. Also relace the battery if it does not test good when it is fully charged (many times, a shorted battery cell is what causes an alternator to go bad). The alternator is definately not working, because it would have kept the engine running even if the battery was bad.

In short, you need to replace your alternator and possibly also your battery.

Battery light coming on. After turning van off, would not start

Your description makes me believe that your alternator is faulty. The system not charging turns the battery light on. The van will not start because the battery is discharged from powering the electronics that should have been powered by the alternator. Start by charging the battery to a full charge, and then test or have the alternator tested.

Van would not start jumped it and it started then battery light came on after about 10 ks. When van stopped and shut off Ignition it wouldn't start again. Radio would not work either after it was started

The alternator belt, is it snapped? If so fit new one.

How old is the battery? Still the original? Maybe time for a new one if so.

Is the alternator whining? The bearings could be shot and a new or recon one will be needed.

Do the cheap stuff first, ie. the belt.

Vote for me if this helps. Thanks
