When i get in to drive somewhere the 2 hi button will blink on then off and the rpms go way upit whines really loud
This is because its not fully shifting back into 2 Hi. make sure vehicle is in neutral and idling, push the 4 Low button listen for a shifting sound or whirring noise. then push 2 Hi button. it flashes while it is attempting to shift you should hear a shifting clunk or whirring noise, then the light will stay lit. after shifting from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive shift into reverse before selecting drive on the column. the rpm going so high is because your vehicle is still in 4 wheel drive. the low gearing results in high rpm. if it does not shift into 2 wheel drive : there is a shift actuator on the transfer case, check the cable connected to it. this cable is connected to the vacuum control pump deal that controls you cruise control. this pump is located directly under the battery box. the plate the battery sits on must be removed in order to see it. check any wiring there and check for vacuum leaks in the lines connected to it . this pump actually pulls on the cable going to the shift actuator. check that the cable is attached and the baffle on the pump is moving. you can manually pull the cable by hand, while having an assistant operate the buttons inside the cab. this will release the actuator in the transfer case allowing the transfer case to shift properly. basically its a locking mechanism, locking the transfer case in the selected gear range. it must actuate in order to complete the shift

Hate to burst ya'll bubble but I just got my 2003 lincoln aviator back after I had a front end accident took it in to have the oil changed and check for a transmission service also wanted them to check for a front end noise. Well go figure apparently its in the front differnential in something called the "vista clutch" anway it requires a new transfer case to be purchased. Apparently it runs about $2000 with labor included. Go figure the insurance company wont pay for it after already dumping $8000 in damages already to fix and stated they would not total my truck with 83000 miles on it. Well all I can say is i was told they only go out if they are burnt out from locking the wheels up and skidding and just 1 in a 1000 goes out so I guess we are just he lucky ones. Good luck hope this helps a little also make sure ther is nothing wrong with the gears cause it could create an even bigger problem.. Peace out!
SOURCE: There is a loud "whining"
Power steering pumps whine when they are low on fluid, or if they are goin bad. Serpentine belts also whine in cold weather or when they are goin bad. Tru spraying just a little WD40 on the belts when its running, if it goes away, you should be thinking about a new belt. If nothing changes, check the power steering fluid, if its full, take to a mechanic
Testimonial: "Thank you !"
SOURCE: My Honda CRV (1998) is making a high pitched whine
Does the high-pitch whine exist when the engine is just running? Not moving (transmission is not in gear)? Running but with transmission in neutral (coasting down hill)?
