follow the fuel line up from the gas tank and you will find a round canister this is the filter also it is usually located on the driver side under that area

1988 Dodge Ram 50 fuel filter is located adjacent to fuel tank. More specifically, the fuel filter is directly above frame rail at front end of fuel tank. The fuel filter and retaining clip can be seen between the two bed mounts on the driver side.
