I have a 78 with an automatic. I had a hard time removing mine also. It unscrews, but it has been on there for over 30 years. Here is what I did:
Wrap it in duct tape. Make it thick so the teeth of a wrench will not scratch through the tape. Find a large set of channel lock pliers or a suitable wrench and unscrew it. (Counter clockwise)
Either there is a small dowel pin that needs to be pushed through tap it out or it simply unscrews
On mine you pull he shifter button out and down inside is a snap ring, remove that and my knob came off.
