Question about Mitsubishi Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 1993 mitsubishi magna that needs help! We are pretty positive at this stage that it is the fuel pump that needs replacing but we were just wondering if there is any other common fuel problems in these cars that could be the issue before we buy the fuel pump?

The fuel pump comes on for a few seconds before you crank the engine. Most likely you can hear the buzz or hum of this with the windows up and all is quiet. If you don't hear this, Check the fuses first. Sometimes this fuse also has something else connected to it. Maybe the wipers or radio. But you must check all fuses. If all fuses are good, acquire a test light and find the wires going back to the pump from the fuse box. Test the wires for power, if no power at first, hold the test light on the wire and crank the engine over while testing the wire. If the light comes on, you have power to the pump but no fuel. Replace the pump.

SOURCE: 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Pump?

Between 100-140 thousand miles the fuel pumps go out on the 1993 cherokee. Its a fact. All parts are manufactured with the knowledge that it will last for a specific period of time then it dies. The relay switch was helpful for a brief while because there was still some juice in that pump, but now that it is gone it is gone.

If you don't see the fuse box under the dash in the driver leg area or beneath the radio check for a covered box under the hood. There should be a fuse spec guide on the lid of the box that tells you where specific wattage should go and for what purpose. But, your fuel pump problem will not be solved by a new fuse.

SOURCE: Z3 Convertible top - seems to be a common problem

In general, without any testing or diagnosis, you could be dealing with any of the following:

* Open relay - Located at the pump unit
* Close relay - Located at the pump unit
* End position micro-switch
* The operating switch itself
* An issue with the pump unit, but I doubt this, due to the intermittent nature. However, do check the hydraulic fluid level.

The windows do not have to be down for the system to run.

The brake pedal must be pressed while operating the switch. There is a switch at the pedal that signals the convertible top system, but if your brake lights are functioning, the brake switch will not be at fault.

The system is pretty simple and some quick electrical tests should locate the faulty item.

The Bentley repair manual for the Z3 has all of the electrical wiring diagrams, for use in the diagnostics. You can purchase this at Bavarian Autosport 800-535-2002.

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and it can be reached by removing the back seat of the car.

be sure to get a fuel pump of the same rating with the one you are replacing.

SOURCE: Replace a fuel pump on a 1993 Chrysler Fifth Avenue

It sounds like a fuel line broke, most likely because it rusted through. The fuel pump is running otherwise you wouldnt see any fuel spewing out from under the car. Get under the car and see where the line broke. In most cases, you can replace the broken section of line and it will be fine.
To answer your question though, to replace the fuel pump, you will need to remove the fuel tank from the car, as the pump is attached to the sending unit inside the tank. To remove the tank, you will need to disconnect the fuel filler neck, the fuel lines, and unplug the electrical connector, then get a jack under the tank and remove the straps holding the tank in the car. Lower the jack and you will be able to access the top of the tank where the sending unit is located. Romove the lock ring holding it in, and remove it from the tank.

Te magna fuel pump or relay??

Sometimes your key will magically lose communication with the ignition you can take your car to a dealer and they can reprogram for about $60 regulators are pretty cheap starting about$13
i would try that first very much doubt it's the fuel pump
but you can check this just by turning you key to acc and you will hear the pump kick in to bring fuel up to the rails and cut out .
