Car heastitates and sputters when trying to accelerate

I have a 98 saturn SL2, The car hesitates and then lurks forward when I press the accelerator, It sputters when I accelerate after coming to a stop. I just replaced the transmission as the Engine codes said the torque converter was bad and gears were stuck, It also sounds like my engine is knocking but its very brief, I gave the car a tune up, new crank sensor, ECTS, air filter, what could it be?

For a car that sputters take the spark plugs out and have a look to see if its covered in oil.. if so clean it off and out it back in. this means a seal is gone. the name doesnt come to mind at the moment but to get to it you will have to take the head gasket off so your better of buying a head gasket seal kit, the seal you need should be in the kit - Mumma Mechanic

On the 98 saturn most likely you would be better off with a new motor but the sputter is probably do to lack of spark ...

in the tune up did you remember sparkplug wires , spark plugs , and it could also be the distributor

1995 saturn sl2 sputtering on acceleration and stalling. idle is fine as is temperature. It was low on oil but we filled it and still is sputtering. What else could it be?

Bad gas. One of the many sensors on the engine could be failing, or has failed. Bad spark plug wires. Bad spark plugs. Any of several other undetermined reasons.
God bless your efforts.

Saturn sl2 sputters when i accelerate and check engine light came on when i kicked it down into passing gear, seems to idle a little low now seems to be getting worse

You'll need to get the trouble codes to see what is the problem. Many auto parts stores will pull the codes for free - I'd start there.

'98 SL2 Saturn Traction Control

Traction control helps limit tire slip in acceleration on slippery surfaces. In the past you had to feather the gas pedal to prevent the drive wheels from spinning wildly on slippery pavement. Many of today's vehicles employ electronic controls to limit power delivery for the driver, eliminating wheel slip and helping the driver accelerate under control. Don't turn it off.
