2006 GRAND VITARA ESP LIGHT ON

I have an 06 Grand Vitara that just hit 50,000 miles and the ESP light came on. I brought it in to the dealer and was told I needed a Hydraulic Control Module Assembly for over $1800! The part is not under warranty. The fault code was C1028. Any suggestions? I am thinking of trading it in being that the KBB value is only around $7000

  • bkincaid Sep 18, 2009

Hi...ESP stands for electronic stability program. The code is definatley c1028. I have tried looking it up too with no luck. Someone else posted the same problem on here with the same fault code.

I have a 2007 GV and have the same issue, ESP light is on and the dealer says replace the hydraulic cylinder for about $1500. Thinking I should trade in as well. Thoughts?

or the brakes are bad and the abs is confused and then esp, find a non dealer any ASE shop, he will NOT lie to you, he is not the stealerships, that throw $1500 models and go, gee not that,, do not use dealer unless flush like Gill Bates.; i love the word usually, nice guess, want 10 more, nah, i respect you hard earned cash(im retired, no need to guess, or rip you off) not one poster scanned it and reported all errors DTC, kinda a wasted effort, not having that, you think? for sure, it can be MANY things, get an independant shop to look ASE RATED, AND not yougest kid, how like to guess. no need to. unless a crook or rich. YOUR call that.

i guess, most here never learned to do brake inspections? that be first, huh, what many shops do is take advantage if that, they start with the most expensive part, and then find the abs sensor smashed, DUH?:

its called building a ticket, find and honest shop. and win.

If this is only on shen the car is in motion make sure you have the same size tyres on all around. Different size tyres will cause it to think some wheels are rotating too fast and skidding.

the poster never said if it come on driving normal on flat pavement, not skidding or braking hard, nor states full simptoms, just wild shop guessing or pricing shocks, why not posts when the light comes on, yah think,OP??

great answer on size. very good. is is tires in gross tire imbalance causing wheel hope while braking, stuffing in $2000 bricks is silly to the extreme ,huge list of inspection and driving on road, and off road, will be best in all cases.

I believe that was the same problem we had with our 2007 Grand Vitara at 70k. After some research we found there was a recall for a bad passenger seat sensor and it would cause that code. We called our local dealer and they checked the computer and our vehicle never had the recall fixed so we took it in and they installed the seat bottom for free and it took care of the code.

It is a common problem usually related to a bad ABS module.

  • Jim K Mar 13, 2015

When the ESP light comes on (Suzuki Grand Vitara) it is usually caused by a problem with the ABS Module.

To get a new ABS Module from the dealer costs about $1200 and the shop charges $600 to install it. I don't think a total brake fluid bleed will fix this problem. I think it is an electronic problem with the ABS module. It's a shame that this item is not covered under warranty.
I have the same problem with my 07 Suzuki and I ordered a used ABS Module on E-bay and the one they sent me had the wrong pin connectors.

Light on,what does that mean, stuck on, or comes on sometimes(normal) we cant guess that.
does it reset each keyon,? or stays on full time
did you use a real scan tool and log all DTC errors, seems not !

got to an independent shop, and ASE shop, (pros)
get them to diagnosis this, the lamp can come on for many reasons ,read the operators guide yet?: no really.
driving on slippery surfaces.
wrong tires, slick tires, wrong size as poster stated, on one tire,
bad brakes, ,this be first, for sure,,
abs failures. ?

id get the brakes at 100% pads etc, and make sure rotors
are not cracked or warped and that the caliper pins are free sliding
and not sticking, and there are no ABS faults, !!!!
then purge the system (i do this every year, as Dot3/4 is hydroscopic,) purge it per FSM steps, (total bleed)
make sure abs sensors are not, damaged, (hit,or packed in mud)
then drive it .

find a ASE shop, they will not "frraauud you" or "build a ticket"

cheers

I have a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara with 96000 miles. The ESP light comes on intermittently. When it does, the vehicle won't go over 20 mph as it is some sort of ******** engine management.mode.

esp can come on , just driving wildly or any tire slip.
the ESP uses brake and throttle and trans controls to limit slips.
that overheating statement is false. pure conjecture.
serpentine belt, why that?
why not use a real FSM book
and a real scan tool, and not work blind, the oper. guide is useless.
"says get it serviced, all other words, not driving badly are useless"
the 20mph is limphome mode. and is serious issue that.

the fsm is here, read that. first , then scan it.

just 4 bucks
https://suzukipitstopplus.com/Products/1045-2006-grand-vitara-service-manual.aspx

now read this carefully the 3 ways it works.
Throttle, brakes or transmission.
http://www.suzuguide.com/suzuki-447.html

if any of the 3 things fail, ESP will be upset,
ESP is last. dead last in the chain of logic.
all most work correctly first.
one thing this is comon failure is DTC for the throttle by wire
if it fails ESP will fail. how can it work with bad precursor systems?
even bad brakes, @!!!!!

why not scan it. all scan tools new can scan suzuki codes
for newer PCM.s
my innova. 3160 does.

truth
you can not fix these cars with out a scan tool.
period. sorry. but that is a fact.
in fact , i usually must drive , scan and log to find most errors.
cant do that at autozoned, not ever.

2006 suzuki grand vitara esp light on

When the Electronic stability program indicator stays on it is alerting you to the fact that the systems control module has detected a fault and shut the ESP off. You must now have it diagnosed to find out what caused this fault.

I have a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara. ESP light in on and other lights are flashing. Is it oK to drive with this on?

Yes it is ok to drive but you have no stability control system at this time. This can cause a roll over if you are placed in a sticky situation.

I have a '06 GV and in the dash appears the ESP and the ABS lights. What the ESP light means and how can I fix it? What I have to resolve with the ABS light?

the ESP is the electronic stability program it works in conjuction with your abs, its it's to help you not over steer your vehical if you go into a skid, the abs keeps the wheels from locking up so you also don't go into a skid when hard braking, check all your wheel sensors and your brakes to make sure you do not have any broken wires or contaminated connections.
hope this gives you some ideasgood luck!!

this solution is not specific, but their is at least 1 manufacturr recall to correct the wiring for the ESP.
also their is some Firmware upgrade available for the engine computer at your Suzuki Dealer.
Finally my Dealler corrected a problem with an underneat wire connector hos strated to corrode. I had exactlythe same symptom described along with occasinnal errtic hidle engine speed.
