Check the gear lever connection with the gearbox.
Check the gearbox oil level and colour. Replace if necessary.

sounds like you need to adjust the clutch its prob. to tight, need to set it so it can release the clutch more ,

Hello Anon, that sounds like a linkage or selector problem...
Try putting it in reverse (with the ignition OFF) and rock the car back and forth. Turn the engine on and try selecting gears. If this doesn't work..., I fear a mechanic will be required.
Mention the two issues above, that may help...

Your transmission is due for a rebuild or reman

No fix those problems

Need to change the fluid on all vehicles every 3 years

All Ford Trans have known flaws, but require a rebuild
to update & repair the issues.

Atv won,t shift into reverse

2004 Mercury Grand Marquis is not an ATV. Reverse on some ATV's has a knob on the handlebar attached to a cable that sometimes goes out of rig. (the cable prevents shifting down past neutral unless pulled)

2004 Cadillac CTS won't go into gear -

I will quess that there is a 90% chance, you will have to
pull the transaxle & have it rebuilt

From here forward, you change your trans fluids every three
years ,along with the power steering.That will fail next.
