Dan is probably right here and I feel that it's your turn signal switch that the tab is sticking out making contact as you turn the wheels and if they ard working then wait till it really needs to be fixed also if you have a tilt column you may have a wire connector that popped of in the column and it's ticking when the wheel is rotated or the plastic cowl covers for the steering column are making contact this is the colored covers on the column that are the same color as your steering wheel not a problem if you remember punching the wheel in frustration then the clock spring or horn pad has moved and making the ticking noise there are bearings in a tilt column that have pins in them but the wheel would be loose and moving around if they were defective you say only a clicking noise is the symptom
You need to get checked soon as possible may be a bearing in upper part of steering column
Do your windshield wipers still work? There is not much mechanically in the column that would make a clicking sound. Try putting on your turn signals when going around a corner. Do they automatically click off? Is the clicking sound there all the time? I doubt it will become a major problem right now.

I think the steering is assisted by an electric motor on your car - it has no hydraulic assist, and therefore no reservoir. The motor is most effective at low speeds, and at higher speeds provides little assist at all (when none is needed).
