3 cylinder engines do run rough at idle because there's no cylinder to offset the odd cylinder, but if you're sure it's a miss unplug one injector at a time. A good cylinder will make the engine die or run really rough while a bad cylinder won't make any difference.

I mention motocraft because too often I hear about challenges with plugs on fords. I too purchased the big buc iridiums and had 6/8 success. Belong to another truck site and read a lot about this and cel's. If the light is flasing in and out this could be a vacuum problem. I belive Relaga is speaking of the two vacuum hose coming out of the intake. One will be right after the MAF and runs to the engine, and the other after IAT sensor and runs toward the throttle body. Take a peek at the intake and ensure it is connected properly and securely. As it runs up toward the throttle body and right after the air filter you run into the MAF sensor. then a vacuum hose, then the Intake Air Temp sensor, then a straight shot to the throttle body. The air intake assembly connects to the throttle body. Check the entire assembly for any leak and those vacuum hoses. What I also suggest is you remove the entire air intake and clean it. First Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. The sensors disconnect at their wiring harnesses and you do not have to remove the sensor itself (inside tube). As you look inside the intake (once taken apart/off) you will see the sensor (s) inside through the grommet. You can purchase a bottle of CFC MAF/Electronic cleaner at any auto parts store for about $9 and spray the hell out of the sensors like you would spray a cockroach in the face. About 4-5 seconds. NEVER put your finger inside and touch the sensor. The two tiny wires you see are very fragile and delicate and should not be handled. But the spray is fine. Wait 20 minutes for the electronic parts to dry and re-assemble. Double check all connections and reconnect the sensors and then negative cable on battery.

If there are no symptoms (symptoms may include: the engine may be harder to start; the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate), the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

A MISFIRING may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Faulty spark plugs or wires
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector(s)
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor
  • Defective computer

SOURCE: 2003 Hyundai Sonata misfires. We've changed the coil packs, wires and plugs and cleaned the MAF and still get cylinder misfire.

check the injectors with a noid light you may find a bad one. if not check the compression.
