Question about 2006 Toyota Matrix

Pressure Control Solenoid D electrical fault (P2716)

Car has 46340 miles, just started shifting rough and check engine light is on. Once in awhile the light will go off and the car shifts fine again. But then a day goes by and the light is back on and car shifts rough again.

diagnostic said its the pressure control solenoid D electrical fault P2716 code. Not sure if its covered on our warranty, they warranty CS said that if its an internal transmission component, that it will be covered. If external it is most likely not covered.

Could someone tell me if the "Pressure Control Solenoid" is External or Internal on 2006 Toyota Matrix.

There is a Bulletin on this concern, and it is a warrantable condition for 8 years or 80,000 miles so you are still covered by the factory warranty.
The problem is a logic issue in the PCM. The correction is a new PCM with updated software.

Reference bulletin #TC015-07

The contents are below:

TC015-07 Title:
DTC P2716 Models:
'05 - '07 Corolla & Matrix (1ZZ-FE) September 20, 2007

Some 2005 - 2007 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle may exhibit a harsh shift condition and a M.l.L. ON" with DTC P2716 stored.
Improvements have been made to the Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE term:
Powertrain Control Module/PCM) to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring.

Applicable Vehicles
^ 2005 - 2007 model year Corolla and Matrix (2WD) vehicles equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine.
Warranty Information
Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

Repaired myself at no cost!! Found loose connector on pressure control solenoid. See Fixya post on 2005 Matrix!!

  • Greg Jordan Oct 21, 2012

Tested front two pins at solenoid connector first at lower right side of transmission from inside hood. I read 26 ohms should have been 5.6. Pulled ****** pan and found loose connector on pressure control solenoid , the one with two wires toward front of car. Pulled small wiring harness out of transmission , cleaned pins and re installed. Shifting perfect. Looking to replace harness or connector asap. Have a good day!

ps Had ecm replaced recently at 138k by dealer at no charge but still had hard shift after warming up mainly. Prior to this, sometimes car would shift perfect then hard shift. Electrical connector was the culprit! I would have sworn it was something much worse! I was able to release the pins from the connector carefully with a straight pin one at the time, carefully spread open, clean, squeeze back together, re install into connector and reconnect. Good luck!!

2001 Jeep grand cherokee doesn't shift out of second once engine gets warm.

2001 no engine stated. sad.
welcome to computer shifted gear box.
its called a TCM
it does all shifting
so scan the PCM and see why
you cant fix modern cars lacking a scan tool

the engine is misfiring, has 50 causes.
it not the transmission
transmissions can only shift up if the engine makes full power.
it's not making full power, fix the engine, EFI
scan it. ok?

we have posted misfire posts here 100s of time's in fact its endless..
short list.
full tuneup done.
engine gets to 180f and not running cold all the time, scan it to see that. (data scans)

ECT reads 180f.? good or above. and holds
ECT reads low but thermal gun shows say 180f
oops ECT is bad.

no DTC errors stored?, I bet there are.
4.0L coil pack bad?
sparks are new you said.
fuel pressure way too high.?

to scan it , drive to driving cycles.
many errors are not reported with just one drive cycle.
Misfire, errors, DTC P030x , takes 2 full driving cycles , cold to hot engine, and more rules, read misfire, monitor rules in SM.

The engine light starts flashing

that means the EFI system detects gross misfiring
the flashing part means, if you read the opr guide, or SM
that its my damage the CAT converter, due to overheating, it.
it says, there, drive easy to service shop.

the lamp also means and proves the errors
are there stored in the ECU memory called DTC errors.

but if you keep doing driving cycles, they can clear , causes this evidence to erase.
fools many folks this auto clear features.

owning a real scan tool avoids all this , dancing about.

Check engine light comes on and the transmission shifts rough.

There is a tsb on this and the fix is to change the engine contrl
ol modul if the code is p2716. There is nothing wrong with the solenoid....the problem is the sender to the solenoid.

Automatic Transmission shifts late and rough after warm

Try servicing the tranny fluid if not changing the fluid, if the problem has existed too long it may be time for a new tranny.

Sounds like you need the updated engine computer for harsh shifting. Look up under the glove box at the computer. Number should be 89661-02K21 if not, you need the update. It is an 8/80 warranty item.
