Since I replaced the battery my car's engine shuts down.

I own a 2006 Grand Vitara, I recently purchased a new battery. Since that moment the engine starts fine but once I shift to reverse or drive the engine shuts down. If I start the A/C, the engine will shut down even in Parking. Any sugestions, Thanks

Did you resolved the problem?

I also have a Grand Vitara, and just replaced the battery and once I turn the vehicle on, it will shut off.

What it is going on?

Thanks

This is the answer I received from Larry and the Magic Mechanic crew:

"Hold the engine RPM's up to prevent stalling while in gear for 5 to 10 minutes sounds like the computer needs to relearn its idle strategy."

According to Larry, it seem that some times after replacing a dead battery, the vehicle computer needs to relearn its idle setting. There are two ways to fix this, one-following the steps listed above, of course, just be careful when putting the vehicle on gear, make sure you have the brake pedal pressed down and the emergency breaks engaged. Also, make sure you hold the RPM's to a level that the vehicle wont stall, not too high and do not follow these steps while taking your vehicle for a ride, it's better to just do it in your drive way Finally the second way to reset the idle-take the vehicle to a mechanic chop that have the electronic computer to reset the idle position on your vehicle.

I followed the instructions and they work just fine, the computer relearned the idle position and it does not shuts off after start. Thanks Larry and the Magic Mechanic crew.

You may try cleaning the throttle body. I use carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. hold the throttle open and clean it real good. then start the engine and you may have to hold the gas pedal halfway down until it starts and runs smooth. after that see if it will idle on its own, if not you may try unhooking the battery for a few minutes and then hooking it back up and try it again. if that doesnt do it, you may need the dealer to look at the IAC......... Idle Air Control.

I an currently experiencing this issue. I'm having the tech try the reving solution above before resorting to calling the dealership for the reset computer. I'll let you know the outcome.

one of the hardest starters to remove
only held on by two bolts but not enough room to remove it
without taking a lot of parts off

will be best to buy a 2006-2014 vitara repair manual

see if the exhaust manifold removal makes it possible
or the engine mount bracket

this is the 2008 starter

I backed out of a parking space was shifting into drive when my 2002 Grand Vitara acted like it was going to just die. The lights dimmed, radio shut off, power and engine got really low, and in a split...

When shifting into drive you are applying the brakes to do so. Using your breaks is one of the most power consuming things the car uses. Check the cars battery. The connection between the wires to the battery are either loose, corroded, or just extreamly dirty. If none of these apply, you may just want to get a new battery. I myself had the same issue with a 2006 Kia Optima. If you haven't replaced the battery since you got the car, you may consider doing it anyways as it is well past due.
Good luck! :)
