Idle Air Control valve.
the little valve can get clogged with oil, dirt, and carbon build up. you can try to clean this by removing it and with carb spray cleaner and an old tooth brush scrub it a bit otherwise a str8 replacement with new gasket. it is located on the throttle body after the throttle plate section. Your local Aut parts store shouldbe able to print out a component diagram or at least be able to show you where it is.

then plz have a full computer diagnostics run on the vehicle adn then you will have an idea of what is the problem and how to get it fixed. There are a number of individual things and any combination of failed sensors that could lead to your symptoms.

I have a 1993 Ford Explorer that goes into high idle when I put in gear. It does this when the engine is hot or cold.

On some cars there's a speed sensor on the clutch or transmission. That might cause an idle problem.
