Programing ignition key for 2000 grand am security light comes on and the car will not start for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Turn the key on and wait until the security light stops blinking (may take about ten minutes). Then turn the key off and wait for at least a minute and then try it. That should program the key chip. Worked for me when I changed my ignition.

SOURCE: Car having troble starting

ok whenever the security light comes on its a bad thing. it means that for some reason your cars passlock system is not recognizing your key. unless you have a buddy with a scan tool (not a code reader, used for changing computer settings) you will probably need to go to your dealership and have them check your passlock system. they may be able to reset it to match your key again or they may find that your passlock mechanism in your ignition is bad.

SOURCE: key wont comeout of the ignition switch, do i need a new switch?

First, spray a bunch of WD-40 into the key cylinder -- use the red tube which comes with the can to do this -- put something on the floor to catch the oil dripping down.

This has a good chance of solving your problem. After a couple of days, buy some graphite lubricant (Pep Boys) to blow into the key cylinder. Repeat the graphite every month or so for 6 months.

SOURCE: how do you program a keyless remote for a 2000 audi tt

It needs to be adapted using dealer scan tool or if you know someone with VAGCOM.  Make sure you have all your remotes.  When performing this.

Changed battery and replaced lost key. Now it won't start

nitabelle57, It sounds like your security system will not recognize the new key you purchased. Keys have a chip in them which has to be recognized by the security system in order to work. The new key has to be programmed by your security system before it will start your vehicle. You will need a battery charger to program the key as this procedure takes thirty minutes to do. Put the charger on the battery. Be sure everything else is turned off. Place the new key in the ignition and turn it to the run position. The security light should come on. After ten minutes the security light should be out, if not proceed anyway. Turn the key to the off position but do not remove it. Wait five seconds and turn it to the run position once again. Wait another ten minutes and turn it off again. Wait five seconds and turn it to the run position once again. After the final ten minutes turn the key off (do not remove it) Wait thirty seconds and then the key should be programmed. If you have any other keys they will not work now as the security system is now programmed for the one key. If you have another key and need it for another driver then start the vehicle with the newly programmed key and let it run for about a minute. Place the extra key in the ignition and turn it to the run position and wait sixty seconds. This should solve that problem. Good luck with this.

My 2000 grand prix needs the key reprogramed. I lost the original key and now the new one wont program on its own.

Make sure you have the right type of ignition keys, there should be a stamp on the keys "PK3" which is the right ignition keys you need to have for your passlock system.

Auto Relearn:
Time required, approximately 10 minutes.

Insure that the battery is fully charged.
Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

You may have to get somebody with a scan tool to reset the computer codes to make this work.

Thank oyu for using fixya and good luck

I had to replace the whole ignition in my 2000 grand am now it wont start i think i need to reset the security but dont know wat it is

The security system in the new lock cylinder has to be programed to the ecm. To do this you just have to leave the key in the run position for 10 minutes until the security light stops flashing. Hook a battery charger to it when you are doing it because if the voltage goes low during the 10 mins, you will have to start over.

Security light contionously comes on and will not let car start any way to bypass?

Try turning the ignition to on and leave for about 10 minutes. This works in a lot of cars. When the security light goes off the car will start. Unfortunately this will happen again.

The car want start i think its the key because someone tried to steal the car before

IF YOU SEE CAR SECURITY LIGHT ON.WHEN YOU TURN KEY TO THE START POSITION.NO STARTER NOISE.TURN THE IGNITION KEY IN SWITCH TO THE RUN POSITION FOR 10 MINUTES.IF SECURITY LIGHT IS OFF.TURN OFF IGNITION SWITCH FOR 5 SECONDS.THEN START ENGINE.IS IT STARTS OR NOT. YOUR SECURITY THEFT SYSTEM IS GOING BAD THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO REPLACE BODY CONTROL MODULE WITH NEW IGNITION KEYS AND LOCK CYLINDER AND SWITCH.THEY HAVE TO PROGRAM IT IN TO PCM SO CAR WILL START.MAKE SURE BATTERY IS GOOD IT HAS 12.5 VOLTS AND BATTERY CABLES CLEAN AND TIGHT.BECAUSE A BAD STARTER OR SOLENOID SWITCH AND WEAK BATTERY WILL CAUSE NO START UP.

Engine turns over but will not start.

If you don't get ignition after 1 or 2 tries, the security system kicks in as part of anti theft of car. If this happens usually the security light comes on. It will take anywhere up to 15 minutes for the security system to reset itself. When the light goes out the car should be able to start. Do not attempt to start the car if the security light is on or it may increase time to reset itself. If you continue to have this trouble you may have to replace the ignition cylinder. In the meantime you can hold the key a second or 2 longer to ensure a start the first time.
