I own a diesel toyota fortuner in the philippines. i would like to have it for change oil and tune up. Last time i used a synthetic motor oil which is more expensive than the regular oil. I'm trying to cut costs. Is it ok for me to shift to a genuine toyota regular motor oil? Would it be just the same in terms of maintaining my toyota? thanks so much......

Hi there kababayan, The type of oil used plays an important part in engine maintenance, but unfortunately, diesel engines require frequent oil changes due to the type of combustion process it uses. It won't matter if you use synthetics or ordinary diesel oil. if you run your suv at high rpm most of the time or you happen to be a jack rabbit type of driver then you must perform frequent oil changes. Have you noticed that when you put new oil in its color is clear yellow or clear red(or any color depending on the type/manufacturer) and after you have used it for a week or so you check the dipstick it turns black. Well the black part is carbon w/c is a result of combustion seepage around the pistons and valves w/c has a normal percentage for different engines. This fine carbon that is mixed with the oil goes around the engine's moving parts w/c eventually serves like a fine sand paper scratching the moving parts so very slightly. The oil filter cannot filter this fine carbon. If you don't change that often, the oil becomes sludgy then overheating comes in and eventually engine breakdown. So, if you use your suv most of the time or you take it for long drives, it is better to change your oil frequently. If you'll ask me how frequent, well if you have the budget, 3 month at the most, if you use it everyday.

Hope this helps.

My car is a Toyota camry 2003 V6 Oil light is up I had to replace 2 rocker cover gasket & found slugde buid up in both covers .Ive cleaned most off sludge out & then removed the oil sump same again...

it indicates worn hydraulic followers , worn main and big end bearings , worn oil pump
The sludge build up is from not changing the oil on a regular basis
every 10,000klms or 5,000miles
short runs and not allowing the engine to get hot enough to boil off the water vapor from the combustion process
When it comes to oils , it is a personal preference and when you understand that oils ( synthetic or otherwise) carry additives to hold water in suspension, add tensile strength to the oil so that it can keep the moving bits separated and not touching, maintain viscosity and lots of other purposes, then you will realize that over a period of time all of those additives get neutralized and the oil is useless(sludge )
there is not an oil on the market that will last 12 months in an engine even though new car manufacturers claim it to be so
so changing the oil regularly means that sae 20w-40 mineral oil is just as good as the very expensive synthetic oils and cost a lot less
I find that using diesel oil ( shell rotella 20w-40 as an example) will keep an engine clean because it has a higher detergent additive to keep diesel engine clean of carbon

I have 101,000 miles on my Trailblazer and the last time I had an oil change they wanted to put in synthetic oil......nothing in the owners manual about doing this......should I change or keep using the...

its mostly personal preferance.. your trailblazer doesnt call for synthetic so if you dont want to spend the extra cash i would just get a decent brand 5w30 or 10w30

Type of oil for 94 v6 3.0 toyota 4x4

Your truck is going to take about 5.5 quarts.
Since your motor have some high miles on it, I would use non-synthetic 10w-30 oil that has the high mileage formula.
Synthetic will cause leaks on an old engine because the molecules are smaller and will go through gaskets easily.
High mileage formula will help recondition the gaskets.

Diesel oil

Yes you can use conventional oil, but it will mean more frequent oil changes at least every 3,000 miles, also engine wear is much less with synthetic oil, almost zero in fact, but if you change cars before 100,000 miles that is not an issue. I have a car, a Chevy Corvette that uses synthetic oil, I watch ads for sales and rebates, got 3 cases (18 quarts) for $18.00 US after rebates, these are major brands like Mobil 1
