'98 S10 4 cyl. 5 speed: Sudden high idle, now surges.

'98 S10 4 cyl. 5 speed: Idled high coming off highway, then evened out, and now 'surges' up & down after running a few minutes- but runs OK despite that (getting gas as needed to accelerate)! Check engine light on. Had passed emissions prior; 94K miles. Thank you.

Go to your local shucks or auto zone and they can check any codes behind your check engine light and it's free. It sounds like one of two things a O2 sensor or your mass airflow sensor but they will tell you for sure

It surges at idle and stumblesunder mild

I want u to clean the air intake valve and idle speed control valve, follow the procedure below.

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

let me know in a few days if this helps.

1993 park avenue idles high after warming up for a bit, the car has been sitting for a little more than a year and now that winter is almost over I started it for the first time in 4 months. Fired right up...

try redexe petrol additive.could be carbon buildup.when you take to the highway do not use heavy acceleration, but build up speed gradually..could also be sticky throttle cable.....
