2006 HHR, check engine light came on, the engine coolant temperature gauge stays at 0 and the coolant link on my panel just shows ----F. Also my remote start won't work

I can't answer your question but it is worth considering the modern trend is to drive the temperature gauge with the engine management computer rather than provide a completely separate circuit.

If that is the case and the engine management sensor is faulty it would be obvious as the engine check light would be on...

Check engine light on ? The coolant temp sensor is a input to the PCM - engine computer ! All wires come from an go to the PCM . What type of problem are you having ? Maybe able to save you some aggravation an time chasing gremlins . Coolant gauge not working ?
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM) or the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the PCM/ECM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 100°F (38°C) if there is a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor or the IPC detects a loss of serial data communication with the PCM/ECM.

Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click on fuel controls . Click the search button then the blue link. The second an third diagrams both show coolant temp sensors . Both go to the PCM .

Jeff, you haven't said what the problem is or what vehicle you have.

However, be aware that some vehicles have two coolant sensors.

One sensor sends a signal to the ECU to help control the running of the engine. The other sensor sends a signal to the temperature gauge on your dashboard - it shows you what temperature the engine is at - i.e cold, normal or hot.

If your vehicle has two coolant sensors, failure of the first type would more than likely illuminate an engine check light.

Failure of the second type would cause the dash temperature gauge to permanently read cold or hot, irrespective of the true engine temperature.

To locate this second type of sensor, look in the area of the thermostat housing. It screws into the engine block and will have 1 or 2 wires connected to it.

Hi robin,here's a link to the part you need,it's located by the thermostat housing,screwed in,need a deep well socket to remove. Duralast Oil Temperature Switch SU112 at AutoZone com

it's possibly a bad thermostat. Or Coolant temperature sensor is bad or not correctly grounded. If coolant level is ok. Then check for a bad coolant sensor first! or problems in your wiring harness, or your temperature gauge is inoperative. Good-Day!

Hello, the coolant sensor is located in the back of the cylinder head on the drivers side of engine. it is hard to see, it is up under the exhaust manifold

it can wait, If the Service Engine soon light is on and the code is p0128, the thermostat is most likely stuck open.

the connector may have come off. if the computer doesnt know the engine temp, the CEL (ck eng light) will come on

it should be by your MAF-- Mass Air Flow---be careful, when you remove it, coolant will come out, so relieve the pressure, as for your check engine light, reset the computer by disconnectin the negative battery terminal for five minute, this will reset it

After searching around, I found several posts that suggested reseating all the relays and fuses under the hood. After checking, I noticed nearly all of them were not seated well. I pushed them all down and I haven't had the problem since.
