Can you drive a car with a third cylinder misfire? I'm driving to NYC from Pittsburgh PA and my check engine light came on for the 3rd cylinder misfire...I already had the tune up already and they replaced the spark plugs and wires, but the light came back on about 3 weeks later as the same thing. I don't have time to have it fixed now, so I have to drive it with the engine light on and just want to make sure it's ok to drive it 6 hours to and 6 hours from NYC. A mechanic said it was ok, but I wanted a second opinion. Thanks.

I have a 2003 mitsubishi galant ES 4 cylinder and have a check engine light message on i had the code read at auto zone and they told me the third cylinder is misfiring and when it idles it jumps around...

Misfire means you need spark plugs replaced. Or spark plug coils.

That's why the whole car starts shaking because its running basically on 3 cylinders and not 4 as supposed. There is no gas compression on the 3rd cylinder because once again the spark plug is "misfiring"

There also might be even a bigger problem which could be the distributor cap where the coils are connecting outside the engine.
once you fix the problem the check engine will turn off immediately

hope that helps.

My car is misfiring around the 3rd cylinder, where is the 3rd cylinder?

The third cylinder is the third spark plug wire from the passenger side of the car. An easy way to tell if this is the cylinder that is misfiring is to pull up the spark plug wire using insulated pliers with the car running. If there is no change in idle speed then that's the dead cylinder. If when you pull out the spark plug wire you see sparks shooting all over from it (a very common problem) then you need a tune-up.

Check engine light is on.

Turn the key from off to on 5 times and the van will display the P codes on the odometer display. Google those codes and you should find the cause of you problem or an indication of where to start anyway. Some codes don't go away until you unplug the battery.
