Replacing water pump

To replace water pump on Chevrolet s-10. You need take of the top half of the fan shroud, pop off the hoses to the water pump and the take out the bolts to the water pump.To get the fan off, you need a special tool called a half h tool, The half H tool holds the bolts in place so you have leverage to then twist the fan off. Before removing parts to replace water pump first drain the antifreeze.Place the drain pan under the radiator, open the drain on the bottom of the radiator and allow the antifreeze to drain into the pan.Remove the upper fan shroud using a 10-mm socket. Remove the four 13-mm nuts securing the radiator fan to the water pump pulley, using a wrench.Pull the water pump pulley off the water pump. Remove all hoses from the water pump, including the lower radiator hose and upper heater hoses. Remove the four bolts securing the water pump to the block, using a 15-mm socket and ratchet with the 3-inch extension. lift the water pump off the block. Clean all the remaining gasket material off the block passages using the gasket scraper. Lay the new water pump face down with the outlet ports up.And complete the procedure of fitting the new water pump in reverse of how you removed the old one.---------------- Thank you.

How to remove a water pump

Locate water pump.. It's where the bottom radiator hose goes from the radiator. Remove any brackets or parts that are in your way. Remove water pump! Reverse procedure for installation. You have to remove the fan clutch from the water pump shaft and lift the shroud, fan and clutch all out together. remove two bolts in the center radiator support which let the radiator move forward an inch or so, loosen the fan from the clutch for a little more wiggle room to get it out. The shroud will have rubber splash shields hooked to the lower sides too, so be sure to unhook them or you will tear out the holes in the rubber shields. The fan clutch has to come off anyway because it's attached to the water pump. You don't need to remove the fan shroud. Just take out two bolts on the fan clutch and loosen the other two so you can push the clutch back a little (DON'T let the fan clutch fall). Then remove the water pump. It's a little tight, but much easier than removing the fan shroud.the only specialty tool that you will need is the water pumpt "grab" tool and the fan clutch wrench. These two items come together in one kit that you can rent from the Auto Parts store.
The "grab" tool holds the water pumpt pully firmly while you rotate the fan clutch retainer using the fan clutch wrench.

DO NOT attempt to use a break over bar or some other home-grown tool to hold the water pump pully while attempting to break the fan clutch free - you will mess up the heads of the four retainer bolts holding the pully to the water pump face.
this will help.thanks.

How do you take fan off to get to water pump

A special fan tool is required to remove the fan from the water pump. Yes it does unscrew. One part of the tool holds the bolts of the pulley while the other part unscrews the large nut on the water pump. Tool rental is available at some auto parts stores.
