I have a '92 ford ranger custom,v6, 3.0 engine. I've had it for 5 years and didn't have a problem til i replaced the starter 2 years ago with a rebuilt starter. Now, since last summer when i turn it over when it's cold it takes about 5 tries for it to engage, then it decrease its idle fast til it dies, it will do this another 2 times til it starts to idle properly. The check engine light comes on as well as the battery light. I've replaced battery connectors and the terminals are clean, spark plugs are new, the battery looks good and i can't quite figure out what the problem is. 315 000 kms.
A common misconception is that a battery light indicates a problem with the battery itself. A battery light actually indicates that your electrical system is running off the battery and that your alternator has gone bad. The check engine light could be a number of things and I would need a code to tell anything with that. I would start with a new alternator, and if this has been going on more than a few weeks I'd replace the battery to be safe. The idle issues could very well be caused by a lack of electrical power for the system to run on. Also if your battery is 5 years old it may just be time to replace it for its age, but again, the alternator is what is causing your battery light, not the battery.
Run scanner for trouble codes, some auto parts store will do this for free, check starter solenoid, check voltage at battery , 12+volts not started , 14+ amps when running
